About the Department

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) reports directly to the Institutional Official for the University in the Office of Research and Innovation.

This committee evaluates, reviews, approves or disapproves activities involving the use of live vertebrate animals at North Carolina State University. All animal use, for the purposes of research or teaching performed by University faculty, students or staff, on and off campus, is subject to IACUC evaluation and review. The IACUC monitors all approved animal use activities for compliance with University policies and federal regulations and guidelines. The IACUC consists of a Chair, a member from the general public, a member who is not a scientist, a veterinarian experienced and knowledgeable with regard to laboratory animal research, and a variable number of faculty members with different scientific specialties. IACUC members are appointed by the Institutional Official. The authority and responsibilities of the IACUC are mandated by federal regulation and policy.

In addition to reviewing all animal care and use and approving or withholding approval of animal activities on a case-by-case basis, the IACUC monitors approved animal use through inspection of all animal use areas at least twice per year. The committee has the authority to require improvements and changes in the University’s animal care and use program. It is a central body overseeing animal use and distribution of information regarding animal use to all University departments.

The IACUC is also charged with investigating allegations of noncompliance with approved animal use, or animal welfare guidelines and laws. The committee provides information on legislative changes, animal welfare regulatory compliance guidance to appropriate colleges and departments to facilitate maintenance of high standards of excellence in the University’s animal care and use program.

Essential Job Duties

The selected candidate will provide technical and administrative review of laboratory animal research proposals prior to submission to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The incumbent in this position will provide support and guidance to investigators from initial proposal review and submission through completion of the study. The incumbent in this position will also coordinate submissions and revisions with the Committee.
 
 Essential Functions
  • Performs pre-committee analysis of protocols; reviews for completeness and compliance with regulations and IACUC policies.
  • Onboarding/ training/ EHS/ OHS coordination:onboard new staff and students, provide orientation, work with EHS and OHS staff as a liaison for IACUC to ensure compliance
  • Ensures IACUC training and OHS requirements are in place prior to approval of protocols and maintains the AALAS learning library and personnel compliance tracking reports.
  • Attends IACUC meeting(s) and writes detailed meeting summaries regarding ethical and animal welfare issues analyzed by committee and documents the final determinations of the IACUC.
  • Serves as liaison between IACUC and investigators.
  • Writes clear and detailed correspondence to investigators.
  • Maintain clear and accurate IACUC files
  • Ensures that ethical issues are addressed.
  • Inspection coordination: set up inspections, work with facility managers, assist in writing reports after inspections 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.

  • High level of knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat software programs.
  • Be able to adapt and learn the Research Enterprise Data system for online management of IACUC protocol processing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefer candidate with similar experience working in a fast-paced office environment, providing administrative support to a variety set of stakeholders ranging from students, staff and upper-level administrators to external customers.

  • Prefer a working knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research and Teaching, USDA animal welfare regulations, Public Health Service Policy, and the general mission, operation and functions of an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.

Required License(s) or Certification(s)

Completion of professional certification is required within one to three years, based on experience: Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R) certification (Certified Professional of IACUC Administration – CPIA).

Valid North Carolina driver’s license is required and must be maintained throughout employment.
