Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 
The Academic Advisor will prepare individualized educational plans and provide academic advising to program participants. Will monitor academic progress, class attendance, and serve as a liaison with target school personnel for retrieval of academic data.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. Assist the Assistant Director with recruitment and identification of eligible students.
  2. Review applications and serve as a member of the student selection committee.
  3. Collect student grades from each high school grading period and document GPA’s annually.
  4. Assist in providing transportation for off-site program activities.
  5. Assist the Assistant Director with overseeing of the Upward Bound Program.
  6. Provide academic advising to program participants and guide them towards college prep coursework.
  7. Assist the Assistant Director tutoring component for the academic and summer sessions.
  8. Provide weekly follow-up on Bridge student’s academic progress during the summer sessions.
  9. Assist the Assistant Director with follow-ups of UB graduates.
  10. Assist students with college admissions, financial aid information and testing.
  11. Coordinate and organize scheduled college visits.
  12. Other responsibilities as assigned by the Project Director. 

Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in school personnel, counseling, psychology, sociology, social work or a related field.
  • Knowledge of academic advising, FAFSA, standardized testing, college admissions, etc.

Preferred:

  • Experience in Academic Advising in Secondary Education.
  • Experience working in TRIO or similar programs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Proficiency in computer applications, specifically Microsoft Office Programs such as Word, Excel, Access and Power Point.
  2. Ability to communicate effectively with individuals (or groups of individuals) as necessary.

Physical Requirements  

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.  
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.  
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment 

Work is performed in a standard office environment.   
Work-inside a well-lighted and air-conditioned area most of the time.  
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
