About the Department

The main purpose of Prestage Department of Poultry Science is to support the North Carolina poultry industry research, teaching, and extension activities. Poultry is the largest income-producing commodity in the state, and Prestage Department of Poultry Science works hand in hand with the different producers, commodity organizations, allied industries, and other state agencies in educating and distributing information gleaned from research and extension activities at the university level. The Department conducts research and extension projects in physiology, biotechnology, microbiology, nutrition, toxicology, genetics and management with the ultimate goal to improve the production and wholesomeness of poultry as a food product.

Essential Job Duties

The primary duties of the Prestage Department of Poultry Science Health and Nutrition Laboratory Manager is to manage the day-to-day research operations of the Prestage Family Laboratory in Turkey Immunology and Health, and shared laboratory spaces within the Prestage Department of Poultry Science physiology core. A successful candidate will maintain a clean and organized lab environment, perform equipment maintenance, ensuring safe operations of laboratory facilities in the department, assist researchers in experimental plan execution, complete annual equipment inventory, and perhaps work as the Scott Hall building liaison for contact between the department and facilities in matters of building concerns. 

This position may also assist PIs to supervise undergraduate and graduate student research and the use of laboratory equipment. This individual will be responsible for ensuring the overall safety of the lab spaces, coordinating across groups to implement the lab safety plans and good laboratory practice while regularly interacting faculty, staff, students, and departmental farm staff to maintain smooth operation of the laboratory.

Primary responsibilities include lab inventory and supply maintenance, coordinating experiment calendars, feed orders, chemical and biohazard safety protocol implementation, and prepare lab safety protocols.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Requires Master’s or bachelor’s degree in a life science discipline with specialized experience. Alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for an advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
  • At least 3 years of experience working in a laboratory or clinical setting.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, must be able to work effectively among leadership, technical staff, external partners, etc.
  • A background in scientific principles of modern laboratory instrumentation.
  • Grounded in basic principles of good laboratory practice (including proper personal protective equipment and appropriate safety protocols).
  • Familiarity with computer operating systems (e.g. Microsoft Windows).

Preferred Qualifications

  • B.S. in animal or poultry sciences.
  • Experience as a laboratory manager in either an academic or industry/clinical setting.
  • Continuing education on various laboratory techniques and skills via typical vendor training, lectures, and webinars.
  • Demonstrated interest in continually improving processes and operations.
  • Critical thinker who has a proclivity for troubleshooting and problem-solving.
