Summary of Position

The Assistant Director is responsible for providing vision, strategic direction, and accountability for student development within the Office of Student Life and will work very closely with all areas in Student Life – Campus Recreation, Community Impact, New Student Experience, and Student Engagement – so our students have the best opportunity to ‘Find their Fit’ at PSU. This position provides leadership for student staff development and training, assessment of Student Life Programs, student travel, and sport club development.

The Assistant Director will use assessment and evaluation data to ensure that Student Life students are getting well prepared for life after college while having a transformative experience within our program and feeling connected to the PSU community. The Assistant Director also oversees the development and enhancement of initiatives and experiences to meet the needs and interests of first-year students.

This position works collaboratively across the university and draws upon student development literature and best practices to ensure meaningful connections for students within Student Life. This position reports to the Director of Campus Recreation & Student Life.

The successful candidate must understand the importance of and demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion, as the university aspires to become a leader among its peer institutions in making meaningful and lasting progress in responding to the needs and concerns of minoritized and marginalized demographic groups.

As a bridge across all Student Life function areas, this person should be able to communicate and collaborate effectively with professional and student staff. This person will develop, implement and provide ongoing reevaluation of Student Life trainings and programming, including longstanding traditions, student run programming, late night programming. The ability to improve upon existing and newly implemented events is imperative, as our institution continuously develops. This person should stay abreast of the latest research and trends in Higher Education to align programs as appropriate.

Develop, implement, and assess all Student Life Student Staff Training initiatives, opportunities, and training by collaborating with each of the function areas to determine their needs and working through best practices nationwide to develop dynamic staff training and education opportunities for the Student Life Team.
