Purpose

The Manager for Graduate Career Education leads career development curriculum and programming in collaboration with campus partners and conduct individual career advising to prepare advanced degree students and scholars for their career of choice. The successful candidate will be passionate about working with graduate students and building collaborative relationships across the university to improve equity and access for graduate students, postdoctoral scholars and eligible alumni to career resources and services. This position is supervised by the Associate Director of Professional Development and collaborates with career centers, university staff, faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars to design and deliver career exploration and preparation programs and resources specifically for advanced degree students and scholars across industries, including academia.?


Responsibilities

  • Collaborative Career Program and Resource Development: Collaborate with the graduate school, university department staff, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty and employers to create and deliver career development programming and resources. Develop and teach core career workshops (e.g., resume, interviewing, CV, etc.) and career exploration courses and contribute to the academic job preparation series – specifically focusing on doctoral -level students across disciplines. Lead delivery of department-specific requests and work closely with partners to create effective and innovative career content and workshops for the UT Austin advanced degree community. Hire, train and supervise 1-3 graduate students on career-related topics to better extend services and contribute to a positive team environment and culture by supporting team initiatives, mentoring graduate students and supporting events.    
  • Individual and Group Career & Professional Development Advising: Provide career advising and coaching specifically for advanced degree students and scholars, requiring specialized knowledge of the PhD hiring landscape across disciplines and industries. Types of advising can include meeting with students and scholars in person, through video conference, and by phone on topics ranging from application document preparation, career exploration and planning, interviewing, negotiation, decision making, storytelling and resilience strategies.
  • Thought Leadership, Learning & Resources: Assess graduate student needs and identify gaps in service to extend or develop resources and services and scale impact through subscriptions and online resources. Lead graduate career teaching and curriculum professional development for graduate career staff by maximizing existing resources and seeking out new resources, training opportunities, and best practices in career development and curriculum.
  • Employer & Alumni Relations: Working closely with the Assistant Director for Advanced Degree Employer Engagement, and collaborating with college and school career centers, identify and build relationships with employers and alumni to enhance graduate career education.


Required Qualifications

Master’s Degree in any field, with a demonstrated interest and background in career and professional development, curriculum, teaching or pedagogy. Three years of collaborative program management experience. Strong presentation, teaching and facilitation skills to lead workshops, career courses, meetings and seminars Experience advising graduate students on career-related topics. Passion for working explicitly with advanced degree students and scholars. Ability to work independently and in teams. Willingness to fail and learn collaboratively with the team. Demonstrated teaching and curriculum design experience. Experience working with diverse student populations including international and under-represented students. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.


Preferred Qualifications

PhD in any field preferred. Entrepreneurial spirit and ability to thrive in a new and changing work environment. Five years of experience building and maintaining relationships to develop collaborative programs or resources. Advanced teaching and pedagogical experience. Contributions to the field of advanced degree career and professional development.  Experience managing graduate or undergraduate students.


Salary Range

$63,000+ depending on qualifications ?


Working Conditions

  • This is an Austin, TX-based position and is eligible for hybrid work
  • Some evening and weekend hours required
  • May work around standard office conditions
  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation

Employment Eligibility:

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
