Job Description
ASSISTANT EDUCATOR (TECHNICAL INSTRUCTOR), Physics, to join the Physics Education Group’s advanced lab staff who support the teaching of the advanced undergraduate experimental physics sequence, emphasizing classic experiments from the development of modern physics. Initial responsibilities include assisting with the maintenance of and improvements to experiments, including repairs and adaptations of modern technologies, general maintenance, and upgrades to the lab environment; instructing students in safe laboratory techniques; teaching students the classic experiments of modern physics; working with students on numerical analysis techniques, development of written papers, and oral exam presentations; assisting with the coordination of teaching assistant training, assignments, and allocation of responsibilities; and other duties as directed. A large effort is also put into instructing students on how to maintain laboratory notebooks. There is potential for advancement with broader engagement of programs and projects managed by the Physics Education Group.
Job Requirements:REQUIRED: B.Sc. in physics, electrical engineering, or related discipline; at least one year of related experience, which may include undergraduate teaching and/or laboratory work; experience using common electronic test and measurement equipment and technical competencies in at least one related area (machine shop use; advanced lab technique; designing, constructing, maintaining, and repairing mechanical, electromechanical, or electronic instruments; etc.); competency with scientific computing, e.g., Python, LaTeX, or web development (Linux preferred); excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; and ability to routinely lift weights of fifteen to fifty pounds and work safely with common laboratory hazards.
