Apply now Job no: 501042
Work type: Full-Time
Location: University City - Philadelphia, PA
Categories: Drexel University, Dornsife School of Public Health

Job Summary

Drexel University Dornsife School of Public Health is seeking a Project Manager to oversee and manage initiatives relevant to training a diverse scientific workforce to advance health equity research. Activities at present would center on the Global Alliance for Training in Health Equity Research (GATHER), a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded training grant supporting doctoral and postdoctoral scholars for a period of 3 to 12 months.  Supporting GATHER requires working independently to plan events, supporting trainees in navigating university systems related to employment and travel, and compiling information relevant to evaluating trainee satisfaction with program components and the career impact of the program overall. The Project Manager may also be engaged with GATHER co-directors Alex Ezeh and Gina Lovasi on development of a renewal application, and on related educational, research, or practice activities.

• Dr. Ezeh’s lab is focused on investing in and utilizing local capacity in Africa to address the continent’s rapid population growth and urbanization challenges, and the concomitant effects they have on the health and well-being of Africans. Strategies to meet the increasing demands on health systems in Africa, due in part to population growth, are being developed amidst calls to decolonize global health and development. As such, there is a critical need for investments in Africa’s capacities to ensure that solutions are guided by contextually relevant Africa-led research and expertise.

• Dr. Lovasi’s research team uses systematic observation and longitudinal geographic data to investigate potentially health-supportive neighborhood features. Research projects examine whether such features result in anticipated health benefits across cities in the US and Latin America. Studies by our collaborative team keep decision-makers from relying on incorrect assumptions and draws attention to new questions about why neighborhood environment effects on health vary by setting. Current projects focus on neighborhood retail (food stores, physical activity venues, medical facilities) and streetscape (vegetation, physical disorder, pedestrian infrastructure), about which evidence is needed so that neighborhood change initiatives are aligned with health and health equity priorities.

Essential Functions

  • Manage the implementation of trainee events and travel.
  • Request and synthesize inputs such as trainee satisfaction with program components and follow-up for program evaluation twice per year.
  • Maintain contact lists and a calendar of communications to meet training grant objectives (including with trainees, mentors, advisory committee members, and Drexel offices).
  • Oversee purchasing and preparation of related documentation (e.g., offer letters, travel justification) so that budgets can be managed in coordination with department administrators.
  • Prepare, proofread, and archive reports and communication to NIH or other funders.
  • Developing and tracking relevant newsletters, blogs, abstracts, and journal articles.
  • Working on initiatives that emerge relevant to health equity training and research.
  • Managing project documentation such as Institutional Review Board (IRB) review requests.
  • Complete required trainings and procedures related to employment at Drexel University.

Required Qualifications

  • A master's degree or Equivalent
  • At least two years’ experience coordinating a training program or research team, with responsibility for proactive planning and implementation.
  • A completed master’s degree relevant to education, public health, or other areas of health or social sciences with an emphasis relevant to health equity.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Strong writing, speaking, and organization skills.
  • Proficiency using computer software programs including Windows Operating System, MS Office, Adobe, and project management and data analyses software.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and a commitment to creating an inclusive learning environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree relevant to education, public health, or other areas of health or social sciences with an emphasis relevant to health equity.
  • Experience with research capacity strengthening programs.
  • Experience living and working overseas for 2+ years.
  • Openness to travel overseas as needed (up to 10%).
