As a member of the Student Services Division at Highline College and within the WorkFirst & Women’s Programs Department, the WorkFirst Life Skills Retention (WFLS) Advisor position reports to the Director of WorkFirst & Women’s Programs. Under general supervision, the WFLS Advisor will manage the daily operations, create curriculum, develop, and facilitate workshops for the Life Skills classroom. This course is designed to help students understand and recognize their inherent skills and abilities, gain new knowledge for success, and build upon their skill sets to meet the demands of everyday life and employment. Life Skills is a Canvas structured, Monday-Friday workshop that is also conducted over school break periods. This position works collaboratively with faculty and staff to ensure student success.

This position will require assisting students who receives monthly TANF cash grant with admission application, individualized education and employment planning, credential completion, provide student retention appointments, and general college navigation. The WFLS Advisor will be responsible for making referrals to a wide range of holistic academic and non-academic support services.

This position regularly communicates with DSHS partners about student’s academic progress. The WFLS Advisor represents Highline College and WorkFirst & Women’s Programs at on- and off-campus community partner meetings.

This position is an exempt at-will, full-time position. Hours of work may include evenings, weekend, and occasional travel.

Essential Tasks

Under the direction of the Director of WorkFirst & Women’s Programs:

  • Organizes, facilitates, manages, and develops curriculum for Life Skills. Topics such as, but not limited to: Time management, study strategies, goal setting, learning styles, employment prep, career planning, self-advocacy, resource navigation, financial literacy, and communication skills;
  • Provide individualized advising for students in the following areas, including, but not limited to, college admissions, enrollment, ctcLink navigation, degree and certificate exploration, and funding literacy (i.e., financial aid/scholarships);
  • Determines WorkFirst grant eligibility, processes tuition, books, educational supplies, and support funds;
  • Educate students regarding WorkFirst requirements for students to maintain TANF eligibility; tracks student academic progress and reports weekly attendance to DSHS through eJAS;
  • Communicate WorkFirst state and local policies, guidelines, and procedures to students, staff, faculty, and community members;
  • Identify support service needs for individual students; makes referrals to campus services or community agencies to resolve barriers: Workforce Education Services (WES), Entry Advising, TRIO, Career & Student Employment (CASE), Benefit Hub, Counseling, Financial Aid, Transition Success Center;
  • Organize student data and uphold the highest level of confidentiality with paper and electronic student records;
  • Work closely with the department’s Program Manager and Director with outreach, marketing, and recruitment goals and planning;
  • Serves as the point of contact for the Local Partners Area Meetings and provides departmental updates for evening Professional-Technical Degree meetings with faculty and Academic Affairs division;
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Proficiently use Microsoft Suite, Google Workspace and Canvas;
  • Strong organizational and case management skills;
  • Understanding barriers facing non-traditional and student parents;
  • Demonstrate organizational, problem-solving, and strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Create an encouraging and welcoming atmosphere while working with diverse, multicultural, first-generation, low-income, students with disabilities, and neurodiverse communities.





  • Associate and/or Associate of Applied Sciences degree; AND,
  • Experience working in a higher education or social service environment; AND
  • Experience working with students or clients in advising and development of educational goals.
