Mendocino College is seeking a full-time, tenure-track DSPS Counselor/Coordinator - to join our friendly, dynamic Counseling Department and Student Services Division.

Under general direction of the Dean of Counseling and Student Programs, and as a member of the Counseling Department, this position provides counseling and coordination for Disabled Student Programs & Services (DSPS).

This position also includes guidance and support to the following:

This is a full-time, tenure track, general funded, contract position. The work year consists of 211 days (200 days, over 12 months, 7/1-6/30, plus an additional 8 flex/professional development days (54 hours individually designed) and 3 District directed flex/professional development days. Specific work days and hours will be set at the time of employment and annually thereafter.

SALARY, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Compensation is dependent on education and experience.

Annual salary offered at $78,941 - $113,254. Step seven (7) is the maximum step placement based on year for year teaching experience or two years of FTE work experience in the field per step.

Benefits: With NO monthly premium contribution from the faculty member, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes family medical, dental, vision, EAP benefits and employee life insurance. Additional voluntary life insurance is available for employee purchase. Benefits are effective the first of the month following hire date.

Paid Time Off: The successful candidate will earn twelve (12) days of sick leave per year.

Retirement: This position is eligible for CalSTRS Retirement. Additional, voluntary 403{b)programs are available.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The successful candidate will support success by providing instructional support and institutional collaboration. This includes the following duties and/or assignments:

COUNSELING:

  • Conducts DSPS student intakes and follow up counseling appointments.;
  • Determines student eligibility based on verification documents and interactive process; reviews information with student to determine educational limitations and creates accommodation letters; manages implementation of accommodation services;
  • Counsels students with disabilities considering Career and Technical programs, local degrees and/or transfers to other colleges; assists students in selecting an appropriate major and institution;
  • Assists students with disabilities and exploring and defining their personal college goal; assists faculty, administrators, staff, and advocates in supporting and understanding these needs; maintains regular contact with faculty members regarding student issues and concerns;
  • Helps students become more knowledgeable about their aptitudes, interests, values, and achievement levels; assists students in planning their selection of courses;
  • Stays current with transfer requirements of other colleges and vocational training institutions; acts as a resource for faculty concerning the transfer process to a four-year college;
  • Interviews students who are officially withdrawing from the College, on probation, on academic dismissal or petitioning to graduate;
  • Assists in developing an effective matriculation process for new students, to include a comprehensive student education plan;
  • Refers students who require more specialized counseling to appropriate agencies in the community;
  • Assists students in clarifying their educational and career goals, develop comprehensive educational plans and maintain currency as it relates to institutional and/or transfer requirements;
  • Teaches students how to view available course offerings and register for courses;
  • Assists students in planning their selection of courses;
  • Utilizes and stays abreast of advanced counseling methods and student development theories which include integrating technology to support student learning and career objectives;
  • Assists faculty, administrators, staff, in recognizing student needs, issues and concerns; Provides intervention services for students such as early alert;
  • Participates in shared governance committees;
  • Participates in regularly scheduled counseling department meetings Performs other counseling duties as assigned;
  • Prepares and maintains academic counseling notes, required forms, and/or paperwork needed to assist students;
  • Assists with catalog and class schedule review;
  • Plan and conduct workshops related to the matriculation process;
  • Assist in planning, developing, and implementing effective support for Transfer efforts to a four-year college/university;
  • Assists in planning, implementing, and evaluation the Counseling program through Program Review; Assist the Counseling department in developing Service Learning Outcomes;
  • Assist the departmental planning and implementing staff development activities; Assist with the curriculum development of College and Career Success Courses; Serve on a variety of college committees;
  • Evening or weekend work may be required on occasion, with schedule modified.


COORDINATION:

  • Develops, implements, and oversees department services; coordinates with assigned staff on DSPS program projects, resources, and activities;
  • Lead in planning, implementing, and evaluating the DSPS program through Program Review;
  • Lead the DSPS department in developing and assessing Service Learning Outcomes;
  • Oversees specialized services and contracts, such as Deaf and Hard of Hearing services;
  • Plan, organize, develop program activities, complete program reports, and maintain and monitor the program budget;
  • Serves as the College DSPS liaison for the respective geographic feeder schools and agencies;
  • Monitors District compliance with state and federal laws and policies related to the DSPS and Title 5 CCR;
  • Coordinates and supports DSPS staff in delivering appropriate services to college students who have verified disabilities;
  • Coordinates with other college staff who work to support accessibility such as Distance Education Coordinator and Web & Instructional Designer;
  • Provides information about professional resources and training for faculty in creating accessible materials in their classroom and online courses;
  • Facilitate access to training and other support measures with staff and faculty to specialized software and applicable technology;
  • Manages student files and documentation as mandated by the Chancellor's Office;
  • Oversees all aspects of special class instruction;
  • Facilitates public information and college communications concerning the DSPS;
  • Attends meetings, including local, state, and regional workshops and seminars, to stay current on relevant issues; serves on college committees;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Office environment; subject to interruptions and distractions. Physical demands include sitting, standing, reaching, bending, walking, and lifting actual weight of 25 pounds.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must meet Human Resources guidelines for qualified hiring; including by not limited to a Live Scan background check and completion of TB test.

Posses an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender/gender- identity, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and willingness to create safe and inclusive learning environments for all students.




EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling; OR

Master's degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family, and child counseling, or a Bachelor's degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and either 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work related to people with disabilities, or completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services program or in a program dealing with people with disabilities, or two years of fulltime experience, or the equivalent, in one or more o the following:

  • A. Counseling for students with disabilities; or
  • B. Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities are for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent.
