About the Department

Agriculture in today’s world is a business, whether it be processing and marketing agricultural products, farming, or supplying agricultural inputs. Consumers face a variety of choices that are impacted by policies and regulations, by micro and macro conditions affecting them, and by their individual circumstances and welfare. The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE) addresses important issues regarding the management of agricultural and related businesses, the functioning of agricultural markets, the protection and use of resources, the performance of government policies affecting agricultural and related industries, and the impacts of decisions made by consumers with respect to the purchase of food and fiber products.

The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE) offers undergraduate major and minor programs in agricultural business management and a concentration in biological sciences business management within the agricultural business management program. At the graduate level, the department offers a Master of Science degree in agricultural economics and a Ph.D. degree in economics. These instructional programs are enriched by faculty members with extension and research activities that contribute to the relevance and thoroughness of the teaching program.

Essential Job Duties

The Executive Assistant position will work within the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE) as the Department Head’s Executive Assistant. As the Executive Assistant, this position must attend to the academic, research, and extension needs of the department in a variety of ways. Serve as the human resources representative for the department, this position provides extensive human resources support for policy, procedure, and actions for all departmental positions. The Executive Assistant also works with (and also serves as a backup) the Business Services Coordinator on accounting and on budget matters. TEvent planning, scheduling, and departmental representation are also crucial roles requiring attention to detail, discretion, and professionalism. This position is responsible for professionally promoting the department in person and through electronic or printed material and will serve as the Supervisor for an Administrative Support staff member.

Other Responsibilities

  • An expectation of this position requires the ability to travel on campus and in the local area to complete time-sensitive tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Experience/Education

High School diploma or equivalency and three years of progressively responsible administrative/office management experience; or graduation with an associate’s degree in Secretarial Science, Business Administration, or a related discipline and one year of progressively responsible administrative/office management experience; or bachelor’s degree, preferably in Business Administration or a related discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong editing, proofreading, and listening skills are essential.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and high degree of professionalism and discretion in dealing with sensitive information.
  • Strong skills in learning new technology and ability to training others.
  • Proficiency and advanced knowledge using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint) or similar software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PeopleSoft HR and Financials experience.
  • Knowledge of NC State University policies and processes.

  • Required valid NC Driver’s License or obtain within 60 days of hire.
