About the Department

The Department of Animal Science is the largest academic program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and provides academic instruction to over 750 undergraduate students and 100 graduate students. The Department also is a leader in extension and engagement programs to farmers, allied industry, and the public, and conducts internationally recognized research into the nutrition, genetic reproductive, health, and well-being of domesticated animals.

Essential Job Duties

This position will provide support to the SE Dairy Business Innovation Initiative and the GrowNC Dairy Program. The successful candidate will have a strong background in farm business management, ag finance, and/ or economics with an interest in and working knowledge of dairy farming operations. This position will be expected to call on farmers to participate in voluntary business management programs, cost-share opportunities, and educational programs. This position will also be expected to assist with the development and delivery of Extension programming relative to the same topics.

Duties Include:

  • Understand farm financial management, specifically as it relates to dairy operations and dairy policy
  • Using technology and web-based data systems to complete work assignments
  • Comfortable working in outdoor and indoor environments,
  • Comfortable and knowledgeable about working dairy farm operations and working directly with farmers to determine eligibility for grant programs
  • Strong knowledge of farm business management, finances, and ag econ
  • Completing daily work to meet deadlines for grant projects and reports
  • Develop and administer marketing and promotion of dairy grant programs
  • Collect farmer data and collate it into useable formats, contributing to benchmarking tools
  • Familiarity with research and Extension missions
  • Respond promptly and accurately to inquiries about grant programs
  • Interact with farmers, explain program goals and benefits
  • Build relationships with farmers that allow for sharing of sensitive data and information
  • Relay program information and explain application processes, eligibility requirements, and outcomes to clients
  • Assemble marking information for programs, meetings, and conferences
  • Collect farm financial data
  • Use farm financial management systems to compile reports
  • Collect, organize, and summarize data in reports and benchmarking
    tools
  • Develop and disseminate information at stakeholder meetings/conferences through presentations
  • Comfortable working in outdoor and indoor environments,
  • Comfortable and knowledgeable about working dairy farm operations and working directly with farmers to determine eligibility for grant programs

Other Responsibilities

Provide leadership and project management to a newly developed dairy farm cost share program, GrowNC Dairy. This will include:
  • Develop marketing and advertising materials for the program and associated educational events
  • Assist producers with enrollment in the program and track educational hours and grant management
  • Develop quarterly (and other) reports as required by the funding agency.

Provide support to the Dairy Business Innovation Initiative farm business management efforts and producer grant programs.
  • Work with other faculty and Extension associates to build participation in the DairyGauge benchmarking program, which includes building relationships with farmers, collating financial information and developing reports back to participating producers.
  • Assist with grant award audits, educational program development, conference planning and research data collection- as needed.

This position will be required to frequently work directly with farmers and that often happens at their farms and homes. The candidate must have the ability to operate a vehicle and move freely (without assistance) around a working dairy farm, including interacting with livestock.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Experience with financial software (i.e. Quickbooks) and basic computer programming (Microsoft Excel, Access and other database management).
  • Comfortable and experienced with dairy farms, working outdoors and interacting with producers.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills
  • Ability to travel a minimum of 20%, mostly day travel with some overnight travel

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Ag Economics/Farm Business Management or Animal or Dairy Science, or related fields.

Required License or Certification

A valid NC Driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of your start date.
