Essential Job Duties

Working collaboratively with the Director of Communications and key internal stakeholders, the Assistant Director of Communications manages the development, implementation, and execution of integrated strategic and culturally responsive communications to ensure critical messages are effectively communicated across internal and external stakeholders.

The Assistant Director manages editorial planning and produces original content in various formats to publish through several channels, such as presentations, web, email, social media, and newsletters, to ensure audiences are kept informed and engaged.

The Assistant Director will also work closely with faculty and staff to optimize internal communications, including employee engagement and recognition activities.

The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Communications and will supervise staff, graduate assistants, and interns as needed, as well as work closely with all members of communications and marketing teams across all levels of the organization.

Specific duties include:
  • Establish internal and external communications strategies in support of the college’s strategic goals, in collaboration with the director;
  • Provide project management for all aspects of communications projects, including managing multiple vendors, internal staff functions, and cross-team workstreams. Work with all levels of staff and overseeing vendors to execute project requirements and manage stakeholder expectations;
  • Manage communications and editorial calendars, including planning and tracking of activities for owned and earned media, including social and traditional media;
  • Manage content for a variety of Poole College websites, including but not limited to Poole Enterprise, Poole News, Poole Thought Leadership, Magazine, and Internal Website;
  • Manage communications pieces related to signature events identified by the college, and support the development of communication pieces to support college units;
  • Develop key Poole College newsletters for internal and external audiences;
  • Track faculty and staff awards and manage the process for recognition and promotion thereof;
  • Create presentations for college leadership, including college meetings, advisory board meetings, and university meetings;
  • Support director in drafting remarks for leadership: development events, alumni events, program events, scripts;
  • Maintain internal communications, including online faculty/staff resources; electronic billboards within Nelson Hall; manage internal branding;
  • Serve on various college and university committees;
  • Manage resources, including budget, in alignment with strategic goals.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Writing skills: excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Web and email writing;
  • MS Office/Google Suite skills: extremely strong skills in creating and editing presentations, documents, and spreadsheets;
  • Project management skills: strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to prioritize tasks, and manage competing priorities;
  • Communication skills: demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and in a timely manner with internal and external stakeholders; a team player.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree from a four-year college or university plus 1-2 years of professional experience in marketing, advertising, admissions, communications, or a related field;
  • Strong project management and organizational skills;
  • Knowledge of NC State brand;
  • Some design experience;
  • Experience working in the Higher Education industry at a Business school
  • Proficient understanding of project management platforms and/or collaborative work management tools;
  • Experience with Wordpress website creation platform;
  • Basic knowledge of how to use creative tools like Canva and Photoshop.
