About the Department

The Department of Applied Ecology is a modern science department with faculty that conduct theoretical and applied ecological research at a variety of spatial scales. The department includes faculty associated with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and the USGS Southeast Climate Science Center, and houses the Center for Applied Aquatic Ecology and the NC Agromedicine Institute. The department regularly maintains > 50 graduate students and nearly 30 undergraduate minors. Departmental faculty conduct cutting-edge research, teach graduate and undergraduate courses and engage with the public through outreach and through the NC Cooperative Extension Service.

Essential Job Duties

The Research Associate will work with a team of researchers at NC State University / USGS NC Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit (Drs. Jaime Collazo and Nathan Hostetter), USGS Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center (Drs. Adam J. Terando, Mitchel Eaton) and multiple collaborators across Puerto Rico and the Caribbean to conduct amphibian research. The Research Associate will work with amphibians of the genus Eleutherodactylus, primarily west-central Puerto Rico. Tasks include surveying populations using acoustic sampling seasonally, quantifying habitat associated with survey stations, and collect, prepare and conduct experiments using a respirometer to assess effects of varying temperature and relative humidity on standard metabolic rates. The Research Associate will supervise a field assistant and oversee field activities by graduate students during their field seasons. The Research Associate will be responsible for data entry, summarization, and report writing. The incumbent will represent the NC Cooperative Research Unit and North Carolina State University at professional meetings as needed, and disseminate findings in multiple professional conferences and other forums.

Domestic travel for meetings, workshops, and conferences may be required. Lead daily field surveys in Puerto Rico from June 2023 – September 2025. This position is 100% located in Puerto Rico.

The results of this project will include a report to USGS Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center, US Fish and Wildlife Service, peer reviewed publications, and USGS data release. The Research Associate will participate in all aspects of research activities and have opportunities to develop their own research ideas in conjunction with the project.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Surveying populations using acoustic sampling seasonally, quantifying habitat associated with survey stations, and collect, prepare and conduct experiments using a respirometer to assess effects of varying temperature and relative humidity on standard metabolic rates.
  • Supervise a field assistant and oversee field activities by graduate students during their field seasons.
  • Responsible for data entry, summarization, and report writing.
  • Represent the NC Cooperative Research Unit and North Carolina State University at professional meetings, as needed, and disseminate findings in multiple professional conferences and other forums.

Other Responsibilities

The incumbent may be required to drive departmental trucks and vehicles to conduct field and greenhouse trials and research.

Additional duties may be requested depending on the work load.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • M.S. in ecology and physiology of Eleutherodactylus amphibians.
  • Experience collecting and summarizing acoustic data for analyses.
  • Experience collecting vegetation data to characterize surveyed habitat of amphibians.
  • Experience collecting, preparing and conducting metabolic performance experiments (trials) using respirometer.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary research group.

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. in Amphibian Ecology and Physiology
  • At least 4-years of experience collecting field survey data, and identifying and collecting specific species of Eleutherodactylus amphibians for laboratory work.
  • At least 3-years of experience collecting, preparing and running respirometer experiments to assess standard metabolic rates of Eleutherodactylus amphibians.

Required License(s) or Certification(s)

  • Valid Driver’s License or the ability to obtain a license in Puerto Rico.

The position will need to operate a small pick-up truck (4×4).
