The Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Science at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in the lab of Dr. Shirley Yan. The individual will be trained in the development of a research program to elucidate cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration and to test small molecules for translational research.

1)      Perform of laboratory research in the area of synaptic degeneration relevant to neurodegeneration, synaptogenesis, using human disease mouse model

2)      Perform electrophysiology in brain slices, recording synaptic transmission including long-term potentiation (LTP), patch in neurons in vitro and in vivo transgenic mice.

3)      Perform primary neuronal culture and quantification of synaptic density.

4)      Perform immunostaining, confocal images, neuronal culture.  Perform virus infect to neuron in vitro and in vivo human disease mouse model. Evaluate the effects of small molecule compounds on synaptic function and morphology alterations

 

5)     Manage data and analyze experimental results to produce figures and perform and complete assigments.

The candidate will be involved in all scientific, experimental and administrative aspects of this research project as well as data analysis, including  assisting the PI on project activities as well as editing manuscripts for reports and publications

Additional responsibilities include academic research in accordance with our compliance and excellence in quality care programs, to include active participation in the education of research fellows, residents and medical students, as well as bioengineering graduate students. Responsibilities include participation in the academic and research missions of the University and the Department of Surgery.

 

 

MD or PhD

1.     Experience in Biological Sciences with research experience in n neurophysiology, electrophysiology and/or cell biology.

2.     Knowledge of biochemistry and cell biology techniques, animal handling, brain injection, and primary cultures.

3.     Ability to effectively collaborate with other research staff in laboratory
