Princeton University
A postdoctoral or more senior researcher position is available for a new project on methane decomposition to hydrogen and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in an innovative arc reactor with molten electrodes. The project is led by Dr. Yevgeny Raitses at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) in collaboration with Prof. Bruce Koel at Princeton University. Research involves guiding the development of the plasma reactor through complementary catalyst and materials studies. Major responsibilities and tasks will include synthesis and characterization of catalyst materials for high yield synthesis of CNTs and extensive ex-situ characterization of synthesized nanomaterials by materials evaluation tools. Expertise is required in a wide range of spectroscopic and imaging techniques for materials evaluation, along with expertise in surface and catalyst sciences, and materials synthesis with a focus on nanomaterials. The candidate should have a Ph.D. in chemistry or a related field, with an extensive background and training in the use of a wide range of characterization instruments, which includes sample preparation, operation, and data analysis. The following techniques will be emphasized: TEM, HRTEM, STEM, EDX, GPA, SEM, EBSD, PXRD, XPS, HRXPS, UPS, RBS, AFM, FTIR, UV-Vis, DSC, and TGA. Additional background and training in electrochemistry, electrocatalysis, and photoelectrocatalysis is of significant additional value to participate in other ongoing projects in the lab. Fabrication and characterization of electrodes and use of electroanalytical methods such as CV, LSF, CP, CA, and EIS, and measurements of FE and IPCE, would be valuable. The candidate should also have demonstrated experience with the design, construction, and operation of high vacuum instruments and chambers, including those for PVD, PLD, and RIE. Computational skills such as determining molecular structures and calculating energy levels by using DFT would be advantageous. A demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and to mentor graduate and undergraduate students is desired. The candidate is expected to have good management skills relevant to a multi-user environment, good communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Princeton University is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion. We actively seek students, faculty, and staff of exceptional ability and promise who share in our commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship, and who will bring a diversity of viewpoints and cultures. In doing so, we encourage applications from individuals whose personal identities, backgrounds and/or interests (as demonstrated by their research, service, mentoring and/or advising) align with our commitments and will contribute to the excellence and diversity, in its broadest terms, of our department. Applicants should apply at https://www.princeton.edu/acad-positions/position/29381 and include a cover letter, CV (including a list of publications), research interest statement (a discussion of past research, expertise, and research interests), and contact information for three references. Appointments are for one year with the possibility of renewal pending satisfactory performance and continued funding. This position is subject to the University's background check policy. Princeton University is an Equal Opportunity/ Affirmative Action Employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
