With broad impact across UCSD's multi-billion-dollar research and education enterprise, Academic Technology Services (ATS) provides a variety of digital technology services to faculty, research staff, postdoctoral, graduate and undergraduate students, including all academic departments, schools and divisions. ATS coordinates across campus IT providers (including ITS, SDSC, Calit2, the Library), the Schools, Divisions, Departments and labs, Academic Affairs, Research Affairs, Teaching and Learning Commons, and other critical stakeholders to deliver coordinated services critical to all aspects of the research and education enterprise.

The Academic Technology Innovation team in Academic Technology Services is responsible for multiple instructional and research services at UC San Diego, including the Data Science and Machine Learning Platform, AWS Educate, learning management systems integration, lecture capture administration and postprocessing, and student course resource provisioning.

Are you a DevOps professional interested in empowering students and researchers with cutting-edge instructional technology applications? Join ATS as a Systems Integration Engineer to help create and improve high-quality academic tools for our campus community. The successful candidate will collaborate with a team of career and student employee DevOps engineers, using technologies such as s/ orchestration (Docker/Kubernetes); deployment frameworks (Helm charts); various programming languages (Python, JAVA, JavaScript, .NET) for API and web application development; relational databases (Postgresql, SQL Server), and cloud architectures and frameworks (AWS, Lambda). Upcoming technologies will include Airflow, NiFi, and Grouper.

Responsibilities:

  • Designs, develops, tests and maintains advanced solutions to dynamic academic technology needs by integrating vendor software and community-source projects with the development of custom software, middleware, and databases.

  • Integrates APIs, cloud services, local systems, instruction-oriented authorization and authentication systems, etc., to meet evolving instructional technology needs.

  • Leads and assists junior developers and student employees on DevOps principles and concepts, along with highly-complex architectures and technologies, including kubernetes-based cluster environments, orchestration and featureset deployments.

  • Leverages continuous integration and deployment tools.

  • Work with a wide range of campus stakeholders to implement academic technology requirements and perform ongoing support.

  • Employee must be available to work evenings and weekends as needed. Employee must be available to travel as required.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

  • Advanced knowledge of systems integration deploying complex systems integration solutions.

  • Experience defining architectures and designs for small-, medium-, and large-scale systems, and implementing solutions combining a variety of platforms, off-the-shelf products, custom code, and companion libraries. This includes the jupyterhub framework used by the Data Science and Machine Learning Platform. Experience building and integrating middleware, plugins, API bridges, and translation layers to link locally developed components with vendor-supplied and external systems, including the campus Student Information System and IT Services Student Activity Hub, using event-driven frameworks such as Airflow, Kafka and Nifi.

  • Advanced skills associated with system integration design, modification, implementation and deployment in a complex environment. Experience with administering and updating Kubernetes clusters, including node patching and upgrades using tools such as Puppet. Experience with deployment frameworks such as Helm. Knowledge of core Kubernetes concepts such as cluster networking, including weave and kube-dns.

  • Experience building, maintaining, unit/integration testing, and debugging Web-based and back-end applications written in languages such as Python, Java, PHP, JavaScript, Perl and shell scripts. Advanced knowledge of technologies such as HTML, CSS, JSON, YAML, REST, AJAX, JSON-RPC . Extensive understanding of session management including authenticating to Active Directory, Shibboleth or In Common authentication architectures, LDAP directories and databases using session variables, cookies, and other methods.

  • Advanced knowledge and experience with monitoring tools, performance, and systems optimization, including intermediate knowledge of security for data, data transfers and systems. Advanced knowledge of computer security tools, best practices, and policies including demonstrated experience securing server-based software and kubernetes security architectures such as Open Policy Agent. Demonstrated skill at administering complex security controls and configurations to computer hardware, software, and networks. Experience with monitoring tools such as nagios to configure notifications and alerts of system issues. Experience with dashboard tools such as Datadog and Grafana.

  • Advanced skills creating, building and debugging machine learning platform images for deployment in jupyterhub, via methods such as conda and pip, containing neural network processing tools such as CUDA and Tensorflow.

  • Advanced experience with -based Continuous Integration and Deployment (CI/CD) in a DevOps environment. Write and automate unit, integration and Selenium tests that are automatically run in s prior to committing new code, using CI/CD frameworks such as github actions, Bamboo, or Jenkins.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to consult with faculty and research platform stakeholders and translate requirements into business processes. Demonstrated skill applying continuous process and service improvement via Lean Six Sigma or other methods.

  • Experience developing and implementing complex project plans. Experience creating service offering roadmaps and managing competing priorities. Advanced knowledge of modern software development lifecycle methodologies.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $78,900 - $179,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $37.79 - $86.16

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
