Job Description


The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the foundation of a liberal arts education at Stanford. The school encompasses 23 departments and 25 interdisciplinary programs. H&S is home to fundamental and applied research, where free, open, and critical inquiry is pursued across disciplines. As the university’s largest school, H&S serves as the foundation of a Stanford undergraduate education no matter which discipline students pursue as a major. Graduate students work alongside world-renowned faculty to pursue and shape foundational research that leads to breakthroughs and discoveries that shed new light on the past, influence the present, and shape the future. The McCoy Family Center for Ethics in Society is seeking an Executive Director. The Executive ro Director will work in partnership with the Center’s Faculty Director to set and implement the Center’s vision and will oversee all aspects of the Center’s programming. The Executive Director’s broad responsibilities include strategic planning; supervising staff; fundraising and donor stewardship; representing the Center to campus and external audiences; and capacity-building for interdisciplinary ethics research, education, and outreach that broadens and deepens the Center’s footprint. The Executive Director will report to the Center’s Faculty Director.

The Ethics Center is home to a diverse and growing portfolio of initiatives that engage audiences across campus and beyond. These initiatives include an undergraduate honors program, ethics-focused classes, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowships, research collaborations, curricular endeavors, and public events with renowned speakers. Through these efforts, the Center is committed to bringing ethical reflection to bear on important social problems through research, teaching, and public engagement.

The Center is entering a period of growth with an expanding staff and funding to support ethics and technology initiatives. The Executive Director will lead the Center through this expansion and be responsible for ensuring that new technology ethics programming is implemented with fidelity to the Center’s vision, and that the Center’s long standing core programming remains well-funded and impactful. The ideal candidate will have a PhD with expertise in normative ethics, a track record of leading interdisciplinary research and academic programming, and demonstrated ability to initiate and sustain collaborations with varied partners (e.g., university leadership; faculty across disciplines; cross-institutional collaborators; external funders).

Core duties of the role are:

?      Lead and oversee development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of programs. Oversee analysis, reporting, and program improvements. Oversee the development, adherence to, and implementation of program policies and procedures.

?      Lead strategic planning for the program/entity.

?      Represent the entity or program to the broader university, external community, and other stakeholders. Provide expert consultation related to program development, funding opportunities, or other specialty area.

?      Develop outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships and fundraising/funding. Identify external funding opportunities and write proposals and research grants. Develop and oversee strategic financial planning and sustainability for the program/entity, as needed; monitor performance and ensure appropriate controls.

?      Teach or co-teach courses; oversee the administration of courses; create and/or advise in the development of curriculum; and/or advise students, coach and mentor clients and program staff.

?      Coach and mentor program staff.


Minimum Education and Experience Required:  Advanced degree and five or more years of relevant experience in area of specialization or combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience. For jobs with financial responsibilities, experience managing a budget and developing financial plans. Experience developing program partnerships and funding sources.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

?      Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.

?      Advanced oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.

?      Ability to oversee and direct staff.

?      Ability to manage budgets and develop financial plans.

Working Conditions:

  • May work extended hours, evenings or weekends.
  • May travel locally.
  • Occasional overnight travel.

The expected pay range for this position is $126,000 to $160,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
