Air Pollution Health Effects Analysis in the EBC Laboratory

The EBC Laboratory : Under the direction of Prof. Junfeng (Jim) Zhang, the Exposure Biology and Chemistry (EBC) Laboratory, Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, has been established to develop and apply exposure assessment methods in environmental health research and to conduct quantitative analyses of health effects. The research conducted in the Laboratory focuses on the complex interactions between human host factors (e.g., epigenetic traits, health status, socioeconomic indicators) and environmental exposures (especially air pollution) in order to understand how environmental exposure affects human health at the individual and population levels.  As such, research outcomes are expected to support public health polices and to help design precision prevention and intervention strategies to reduce the harmful effects of exposure to environmental hazards.

Position : One position is available immediately as Postdoctoral Fellow. This position is based at Duke University in Durham, NC. The initial period of the position is two years. It can be extended contingent upon performance and availability of funds.

Job Responsibilities : The postdoctoral fellow will participate in NIH-funded R01 and other studies that are being conducted by multi-disciplinary teams. In particular, the postdoctoral fellow is expected to conduct advanced statistical analyses of data collected or being collected in a pediatric cohort, a panel study in asthmatic patients and healthy controls, and likely a randomized intervention trial. The fellow is expected to help integrating the exposure data and the health outcome data. The fellow will be provided training opportunities in writing grant proposals. There will be ample opportunities for scientific and professional development in a successful and sustainable working environment with a collaborative team spirit and extensive international collaborations.  

Qualifications:   A doctoral degree in a relevant field is required, including but not limited to environmental epidemiology, statistics or biostatistics, and environmental health. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in R Software and are familiar with linear and non-linear regression models, causal inference methods, and mediation analysis. The ideal candidate should show an excellent track record of publication in environmental health journals and evidence that they can handle multiple priorities and to communicate effectively with collaborators and team members.
