Summary of Job Duties:

The Post Doctoral Fellow will be affiliated with the Division of Developmental Nutrition within the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, as well as ACRI and Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center (ACNC). The Post Doctoral Fellow will work within an interdisciplinary team, with access to state-of-the-art facilities and resources to perform both clinical and basic studies. Candidates will be actively involved in projects aimed at understanding the metabolic stress response to burns and in particular, the role of the mitochondrion in burn-induced hypermetabolism. There will also be opportunities to participate in ongoing studies aimed at elucidating the impact of diet and lifestyle on mitochondrial function. The position will offer training in the fields of metabolic physiology, bioenergetics and nutrition, and the metabolic response to trauma. Training in various stable isotope techniques to characterize energy expenditure and substrate metabolism as well as high-resolution respirometry to study bioenergetics, will also be provided.

Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D., M.D., or DVM) in biomedical sciences, physiology, nutrition, bioenergetics or related field required.

  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducts research as outlined with minimal supervision in funded and proposed grant applications under the direction of the Principle Investigator or Collaborators.

  • Develops or modifies research protocols and collects background information for ongoing and future experiments.

  • Troubleshoots new and existing experimental approaches and makes recommendations for research refinement.  

  • Maintains proper records of experiments in detail. 

  • Documents all experimental results including photos where appropriate. 

  • Prepares manuscripts for publication and participates in preparing grants and assisting other lab members in these duties.

  • Maintains a safe work environment and safety training.

  • Maintains all necessary records for equipment, maintenance, use, etc. (this may include service contracts and scheduled maintenance visits).

  • May assist with grant proposals and is responsible for publication preparation and presentations. 

  • Proficiently prepare and process new research proposals, amendments according to institutional and departmental policies, procedures and federal regulations.

  • May participate in periodic site visits from sponsor agencies, regulatory authorities and others to review research, source documentation and research procedures.

  • Attends seminars or meetings as instructed or suggested by the supervisor.

  • Duties may be assigned by management associated with this position that are determined to be within the incumbent's knowledge, skills and abilities.

  • May perform other duties as assigned.
