Office of University Interdisciplinary Programs

About the Department

The Office of University Interdisciplinary Programs (OUIP) provides leadership, direction, and oversight for the programmatic planning and implementation of universitywide interdisciplinary programs and initiatives. OUIP strives to set a nationwide example for interdisciplinary excellence and place NC State on the cutting edge of instruction, research, and engagement in higher education. It fosters and supports partnerships with university-level interdisciplinary programs and oversees the following: the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program; the Genetics and Genomics Academy, Global One Health Academy and Data Science Academy; the Biotechnology Program; the Coastal Resilience and Sustainability Initiative; NC State Innovation and Entrepreneurship; the Integrative Sciences Initiative and Building; the Long View Project, and the Shelton Leadership Center. In addition, OUIP works closely with the N.C. Plant Sciences Initiative, and is developing museum-university partnerships.

Essential Job Duties

The Associate Vice Provost for Student-Centered Interdisciplinary Initiatives aims to expand opportunities for NC State undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars, particularly with regard to project-based interdisciplinarity. The position will do so, in part, through identifying synergies and opportunities across existing initiatives at NC State and developing new programs, with the goal of better-preparing students and postdoctoral scholars for careers where discipline-spanning, team-based work is essential. In addition, OUIP wants to create more opportunities for students to study and solve problems while enrolled at NC State. Throughout this work, OUIP’s model is one in which interdisciplinary programming aims to complement rather than to supplant disciplinary programming.

NC State is already home to many extraordinary interdisciplinary programs that feature project-based learning experiences that vary widely from traditional lab experience to industry partnerships. The intention, however, is for our campus to serve as a laboratory for discovery and problem-solving with a focus on genetics and genomics (supported by the Genetics and Genomics Academy), health (supported by the Global One Health Academy), data science (supported by the Data Science Academy), sustainability (supported by many ongoing initiatives) and other areas of interdisciplinary strength as represented by the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program clusters. Interdisciplinary project-based experiences will feature both research and applications and include partnerships with industry, nonprofit, and government partners, with a focus on programs that allow for actionable products, such as peer-reviewed papers, policy documents, or internal guidance with regard to change that NC State itself can implement.

The Associate Vice Provost will report to the Senior Vice Provost for University Interdisciplinary Programs and is responsible for the following:

Strategic Organization – 30%
  • Identify and connect existing interdisciplinary project-based learning programs across NC State in ways that offer holism and mutual learning while preserving autonomy of those programs;
  • Create a network and community of program leaders and faculty engaged in interdisciplinary project-based learning;
  • Create a strategic plan for interdisciplinary project-based learning that leverages and connects existing programming across university units;
  • Support faculty in developing the skills to connect and integrate across disciplines;
  • Work to prepare students and other early-career scholars for the long-term future in regard to technology as well as global and social changes;
  • Work with the Graduate School and the Associate Vice Provost for Academic Planning to develop approaches that support interdisciplinary project-based graduate and postdoctoral training, including training in concert with undergraduate programs;
  • Work with the Associate Vice Provost for Academic Planning in the Office of Instructional Programs on the administrative oversight of the Wicked Problems, Wolfpack Solutions course experience as well as the development of other interdisciplinary undergraduate courses and learning experiences.

Program Development – 45%
  • Work with the Office for Faculty Excellence to develop programming and activities to better prepare faculty to serve as mentors or advisors for students seeking new interdisciplinary paths;
  • Develop new university-wide interdisciplinary project-based learning programs, with a focus on on-campus projects that support campus operations (the campus as a classroom);
  • Leading the identification and development of appropriate metrics for success with regard to interdisciplinary project-based learning;
  • Explore new opportunities to expand interdisciplinary project-based learning through donor support and grants, in partnership with the Executive Director of Development and Assistant Vice Provost for University Interdisciplinary Initiatives;
  • Integrate, connect, support, and scale up existing interdisciplinary programs, which include efforts that are already part of OUIP such as the Genetics and Genomics Scholars and the Global One Health Fellows program;
  • Collaborate across colleges and units to further develop university-wide interdisciplinary project-based experiences.

Communications and Partner Engagement – 25%
  • Work with faculty and program leaders to facilitate the development of project-based learning experiences;
  • Work with industry, government, and nonprofit partners to identify needs in the context of workforce development;
  • Connect NC State interdisciplinary programs inside and outside of OUIP, including the academies and faculty clusters, to ongoing initiatives.
