The Office of Instructional Programs (OIP) collaborates with colleges and other units for effective academic planning that equips NC State undergraduate and graduate students with an outstanding experiential education. It also enriches the broader NC State community through the support of lifelong education programs. Units within OIP include NC State Continuing and Lifelong Education, Digital Education and Learning Technology Applications (DELTA), and the Institute for Advanced Analytics; the office also provides direct supervision for universitywide instructional programs. OIP provides leadership and support for a wide range of activities including academic and lifelong learning program planning and development, academic partnership development, and new academic initiatives to serve our learners better and respond to the changing landscape of higher education. In achieving OIP’s mission, the office will foster a culture of innovation and strategic thinking to ensure OIP’s academic policies, procedures and structures support program innovation that furthers NC State’s goals, values, and strategic priorities.

- To provide central support for planning and coordination of academic and non-credit instructional programs;
- To establish a clear and comprehensive NC State lifelong learning strategy;
- To develop and implement new academic infrastructure to support interdisciplinary courses, curricula, and programs;
- To lead the digital transformation of higher education to enhance necessary teaching and learning experiences.
Essential Job Duties
The Associate Vice Provost for Academic Planning will lead academic and lifelong learning program planning for the university. The position reports to the Senior Vice Provost for Instructional Programs and is responsible for the following:
Program Management – 35%
- Facilitate cross-functional teams to plan, develop and implement both credit-bearing and non-credit-bearing new instructional program courses, curricula, and programs to ensure that all stakeholders are aligned and working collaboratively toward project goals;
- Serve as a resource to provide guidance and support to faculty, academic departments, and other stakeholders in best practices and strategies for developing new courses, curricula, and programs;
- Create and facilitate workshops to communicate the academic planning process, best practices, and next steps for departments and units;
- Serve as OIP’s primary contact with academic departments to ensure that all proposed academic actions comply with institutional policies and procedures;
- Facilitate review and approval of academic actions by relevant committees, such as the curriculum, accreditation, or other appropriate committees;
- Collaborate with other institutional leaders to ensure academic actions align with the institution’s overall goals and priorities as outlined in the university’s strategic plan;
- Work with the Graduate School and the Associate Vice Provost for Student-Centered Interdisciplinary Initiatives in the Office of University Interdisciplinary Programs to develop interdisciplinary courses and learning experiences;
- Serve as NC State’s primary contact with the UNC System Office for academic program planning actions;
- Serve as project manager for strategic plan implementation plan initiatives where OIP is the lead contact.
Process and Policies – 35%
- Review, develop and implement procedures and protocols for academic actions, including creating proposal templates and workflows;
- Ensure that all academic actions are properly documented and recorded in institutional databases and systems, and communicated effectively to relevant stakeholders;
- Facilitate the academic action processes to ensure proposals are routed promptly;
- Work with the Associate Vice Provost for Student-Centered Interdisciplinary Initiatives to establish policies and procedures to support the operation of interdisciplinary courses, curricula, and programs.
Reporting – 30%
- Identify and/or develop suitable data analytics tools to generate reports to inform academic program planning and development decisions;
- Analyze and report on academic action data, including proposals, approvals, and outcomes, to identify improvement opportunities and ensure compliance with regulations and accreditation standards.

Minimum Education and Experience
Requires a relevant post-Baccalaureate degree with a minimum of three (3) years or greater of related professional experience, or a relevant undergraduate degree and a minimum of five (5) years or greater of relevant experience may be substituted for the advanced degree.
Other Required Qualifications
- Deep understanding of academic program planning and development processes, policies and regulations, and knowledge of accreditation standards and compliance requirements;
- Familiarity with academic databases, information systems, and software used in academic program planning and development;
- Demonstrated proficiency in using data analytics tools and the ability to interpret and present data in a meaningful and accessible way to various stakeholders, including faculty, administrators, and external partners;
- Evidence of working with faculty, academic departments, and cross-functional teams;
- Ability to facilitate complex processes and workflows and collaborate with stakeholders;
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills as well as attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to support relationship building and effective collaboration with stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a relevant field and at least five years of progressively responsible experience at the college, university, or system level in academic administration, strategy, planning, budgeting, and/or human resources.
- Earned doctorate and extensive experience at the college, university, or system level in academic administration, strategy, planning, budgeting, and/or human resources.
- Understanding of academic governance, organization, and structures.
- Understanding of organizational behavior and change, decision processes, continuous improvement, and project management approaches (e.g. Lean Six Sigma, Agile).
- Demonstrated knowledge of current issues and trends in higher education, in particular for research-intensive universities.
- Experience in leading cross-functional teams and managing complex projects.
