Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Assistant Program Director is a member of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences Office of the Dean at the University of Maryland, College Park. He or she provides executive level management for college and external events primarily, yet not exclusively, for the office of the dean. Events will range from informal gatherings to large formal college proceedings (including commencement, Maryland Day, and fundraising events).

This position is responsible for managing, and completing, as necessary, many details associated with executing special events in the college. The Assistant Program Director will oversee invitations and registration, logistics and vendor agreements, work with staff, faculty, volunteers, and campus officials, and brief the leadership on event planning progress and additional steps as required. This position hires and supervises a Graduate Assistant and manages, as appropriate, student workers, and BSOS Ambassadors.

He/she will manage the college’s event budget of $120,000 as well as individual departmental and center budgets ranging up to $10,000, overseeing expenses and payment with appropriate university staff. The position is also responsible for maintaining an events calendar for the college and providing staff with specific details regarding their involvement.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:
  • At least five years of work experience that demonstrates the ability to handle large-scale projects, and the ability to manage multiple priorities. 
  • Experience in event planning and organization required, including the ability to negotiate pricing menu planning within a specified budget; and direction of event day set-up. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Detail-oriented with a demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of a team in a creative, fast-paced environment. 
  • Strong budgeting and resource management skills.
  • Strong project management, problem-solving, and customer service skills. 
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written skills. 
  • Ability to work well and interact with all levels of personnel inside and outside of the University. 
  • Experience managing volunteers required. 
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work, take initiative, exercise good judgment, and manage multiple concurrent projects. 
  • Ability to assess, recommend and implement programming based on strategic planning goals. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook). 
  • Knowledge of commonly used desktop publishing and graphics software, and web applications, such as Drupal, and familiarity with other communication platforms and presentation software. 

The ability to work the number of hours needed to get the job done, including occasional nights and weekends, is required. Travel may be required.

Additional Certifications:

Professional meeting planning certification is preferred.
