Research Scientist

Job Description

RESEARCH SCIENTIST, Chemical Engineering (ChemE), to join a lab conducting process development, modeling, and systems engineering research.  Will perform protein--specifically the rAAV capsid protein--crystallization experiments in 24 well crystallization plates, crystal 16, mid-scale batch crystallizer, followed by physicochemical characterization of the crystals using characterization techniques (e.g., TEM, polarizer, DSC, TGA, EDX, WDX, XRD); perform biological experiments (e.g., preparing mammalian suspension and adherent cell culture, cell infection, fluorescence study, biological assays); study crystal dissolution in physiological pH and crystal stability analysis; develop chromatography- and ultracentrifugation-based rAAV downstream purification strategy and compare performance with crystallization-based purification strategy; design a continuous crystallizer and perform crystallization experiments for mass scale production; build a first principles-based multiscale model for formulating crystals in a droplet and in a stirred mid-scale and continuous reactor and extract crystal nucleation and growth kinetics using parameter estimation strategy; develop first principles-based nucleation and growth models using coarse-grained MD simulation; explore the formation of condensed phase followed by crystal nucleation and growth in the condensed phase using kMC, MD and MC simulation; write grants; and contribute to other projects.

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED: Ph.D. in chemical engineering, chemistry, material science, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, bioengineering, or related field; expertise with protein crystallization, cell culture preparation, bioassays, data analysis, PBE and CFD-based mathematical modeling, numerical simulation, and parameter estimation; wet lab experience for protein crystallization and biological experiments; bioprocess development experience, including rAAV downstream purification; and ability to handle multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work independently.  PREFERRED: MD, MC, or kMC simulation experience; experience with bioanalytical techniques, e.g., ddPCR, ELISA, fluorescence microscopy, and HPLC; and five years’ related postdoc experience.  Job #22792
