Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Coordinator for University Archives facilitates access and use of university-related records and resources by delivering a broad range of reference and access services. The coordinator will support research and programmatic initiatives for The 1856 Project, the University of Maryland Studying Slavery Chapter, and assist with Project STAND, the UMD-hosted radical, grassroots, archival, consortial project between colleges and universities around the country.

The project has created a centralized digital space highlighting analog and digital collections emphasizing student activism in marginalized communities. The coordinator will play a critical role in supporting the advancement of the library’s strategic priorities around democratization, anti-racism, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
B.A. degree required.

Experience:
2 years or more of experience in archival expertise is required.

Knowledge, skills, abilities:
  • A broad knowledge of collections, resources, and tools relevant to providing reference services for various unique collections materials.
  • An in-depth knowledge of the collections, online resources, and other resources relevant to collection strengths in University Archives.
  • Familiarity with cataloging issues, archival arrangement, and description work in academic libraries.
  • Ability to create descriptions of special collections materials for guides and summary statements.
  • Demonstrates a history of initiating or supporting DEI and social justice initiatives projects.
  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility and to work independently on various assignments and projects.
  • Strong computer and internet skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with the public in both reading room assistance and distance assistance reference work.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science or
  • Bachelor with five years of experience directly working with archival collections, emphasizing archival studies preferred.
  • 3-4 years of experience preferred.
  • Familiarity or willingness to manage research data sets.
  • Significant experience with utilizing social media platforms effectively.
  • Ability to effectively supervise student assistants and volunteers. Knowledge of basic donor cultivation skills and collection development issues.

Additional Information:

Additional Position Information:
  • The salary range is $51,520 to $64,400, salary is commensurate with experience.
  • You must be legally able to work in the United States; the University of Maryland Libraries will not sponsor individuals for employment.
