Organizational Summary:

The Center for Urban Transportation (CUTR) at the University of South Florida is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate. In 1988, CUTR was established by the Florida Legislature and is housed within USF’s College of Engineering. Our mission is to "proactively support the implementation of innovative multimodal transportation solutions and develop leaders through research, education, and action.” Our work supports transportation agencies, the transportation profession and community, policymakers, and the public through high quality, objective expertise in the form of insightful research, comprehensive training and education, effective technical assistance, and in-depth policy analysis that translates directly into benefits for our project sponsors. CUTR conducts approximately $20 million in research each year, employing 40 full-time research and affiliated research faculty plus 60 support staff and 50 students. CUTR’s diverse full-time faculty members combine academic knowledge and extensive “real world” experience in developing innovative, implementable solutions for all modes of transportation.

Position Summary:

The Motorcycle Injury Prevention Research (MIPR) program at CUTR is committed to addressing traffic safety issues through research focused on preventing motor vehicle injuries and deaths and promoting safe mobility. The program specializes in two- and three-wheeled vehicle safety, including motorcycles, mopeds, and micromobility devices. Currently, MIPR provides technical and administrative supports for Florida motorcycle safety program as well as Florida impaired driving program. The interdisciplinary MIPR team consists of traffic engineers and planners, crash investigators, public health professionals, instructional designers, graphic designers with significant knowledge of, and experience with behavioral traffic safety. The team’s areas of expertise include behavioral traffic safety, data analysis and visualization, epidemiology of motor vehicle collisions and injuries, crash modeling, program development and evaluation, traffic safety policy, and regulation development and evaluation.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate supports the team's mission by performing data analysis and crash modeling, surveillance relevant to traffic safety issues in Florida and nationally. This position works closely with other team members to develop and conduct research and evaluation projects.

QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience):

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctoral degree from an accredited institution or the highest degree appropriate in field of traffic safety, transportation engineering, transportation planning, social or behavioral sciences, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of experience using a statistical software to conduct analysis of traffic safety information systems to include crash, citation, hospital/injury surveillance systems, licensing, vehicle and VIN, etc.
  • Traffic safety database management and scripting experience, such as with FARS.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in defining and conducting research projects.
  • Willingness to work with a team in managing multiple research tasks.
  • Working knowledge and/or educational background with GIS software.
  • Ability to secure extramural funding support for projects by preparing quality grant proposals, timelines, and budgets. Experience managing federal/state research grants.
  • Two years' experience using a statistical software to conduct data analysis.
  • One year or more years of experience conducting traffic safety related data analysis or surveillance. This may be demonstrated through peer-review publication, professional newsletter contributions, conference proceedings, agency level reports, or other outputs. May consider experience with data analysis related to other disciplines as commensurate depending on complexity.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships, communicate information clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, to diverse audiences, and work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse personalities and teams in a respectful environment.
