Essential Job Duties

Primary responsibility is to provide direct assistance to Horticulture and Agriculture Agents as needed. Other duties include maintaining the ornamental pond in the Discovery Gardens and assisting with garden maintenance. Assist with Master Gardener Volunteer programming as assigned by the Horticulture Agent. Assist with agriculture programming, including row crops, agriculture education, and livestock, as assigned. Must be willing to work outside in different weather conditions.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The North Carolina Cooperative Extension provides knowledge-based research information from North Carolina State University and North Carolina A&T State University to the citizens of the state to enrich and enhance the lives of its citizens through educational programs, information dissemination, and public events.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Assist Horticulture and Agriculture Agents with programming. Also provide technical support to manage public garden facilities and help facilitate Master Gardener Volunteers.

Employee may be called upon in case of a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Onslow County. Service to the citizens during a disaster may result in the assignment of other duties which will take precedence over duties described in this job announcement.

Work Schedule

8:00AM - 5:00PM with flexibility and occasionally working after hours or weekends as necessary.

Minimum Experience/Education

The minimum requirement for employment with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension (NCCE) is a high-school diploma or equivalent. Advanced training in related fields is preferred.

Department Required Skills

High school diploma with two years of specialized training and/or education in environmental education, horticulture, or agriculture are desirable.
Must be able to meet the physical demands of the job.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

Environmental education and/or horticulture/agriculture background. Knowledgeable in creating documents with word processing and spreadsheet programs, good organizational and people skills, and a willingness to learn. Pond management, irrigation management, agriculture and agriculture equipment experience a plus.

Required License or Certification

Applicant must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license and comply with Onslow County insurance regulations (applicants must not have more than 3 points over a 3-year period nor have any DWI convictions, and a reliable personal vehicle for travel.
