The current base salary range for this position is $56,600-$78,500. Position duration: One year, with possibility of an extension depending on performance and availability of funding.

Position description
The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences top-ranked programs attract stellar students and professors from around the world, who pioneer the frontiers of information science and technology with broad impact on society. The UC Berkeley Robotic AI & Learning Lab (RAIL) research focus is to enable machines to exhibit flexible and adaptable behavior, acquired autonomously through learning. To that end, we work on learning algorithms, robotics, and computer vision. We are seeking a robotics Assistant/Associate Specialist, interested in contributing to engineering for research projects, robotics and machine learning infrastructure, and some technical support. This position would provide candidates with opportunities to participate in research, in collaboration with students and postdocs at RAIL.
Job Responsibilities include:

  • Robotics engineering: design of controllers, computer vision systems, and real-world experimental setup design (e.g., motion capture, instrumentation and sensors, etc.), and other infrastructure. Mostly software, some (relatively light-weight) hardware work.
  • Contributing to research projects and papers through engineering, infrastructure, and experiment support. This might include contributing to engineering and implementation, setting up real-world experiments, and conducting experiments.
  • Duties may involve some system administration support work, such as setting up GPU servers and job schedulers, as well as software infrastructure to facilitate running experiments on cloud services such as GCP and AWS. Duties may also include assistance with maintenance, procurement, and repair of robotic systems.

    Qualifications
    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
    Candidate must have a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) at the time of application.
    Preferred qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent international degree in Computer Science plus 1-2 years of research/laboratory experience, or Master's (or equivalent) degree in Computer Science.
  • Excellent software engineering skills, especially with Python.
  • Working knowledge of standard robotics frameworks, such as ROS.
  • Solid organizational and communication skills.
  • Prior experience with machine learning frameworks, such as PYTorch or JAX.
  • Prior experience with robotics research or robotics engineering (e.g. internships, undergraduate research).
  • Some mechanical engineering, hardware design (e.g. CAD, 3D printing, laser cutting)
  • Some system administration experience.
