Summary of Position

As STAR Team Lead, the position is responsible for supervising a designated team responsible for the management of a prescribed portfolio of sponsored programs activity. The Team Lead will provide day-to-day guidance and supervision to an assigned STAR team, and will have accountability for the quality of unit work, development of standards, prioritization of assignments, and the evaluation of unit output. The Team Lead will be required to participate in the provision of unit services in an effort to maintain efficiency, but the primary function of the position rests in the supervision of team members and the services provided.

The Team Lead will interact with constituents utilizing excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills, be collegial and respond in a professional and timely manner, serving as an expert resource to principal investigators, research staff and others in such areas as interpreting policies, regulations and statutes, analyzing needs and resolving complex, rare, and unusual problems as they arise.

  • Master’s degree in field related to finance or business and five years of experience in sponsored programs administration, including grant and contract negotiations in an academic environment, or Bachelor’s degree in field related to finance or business and seven years of similar related experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of federal regulations, sponsor guidelines, and the Federal Office of Management and Budget Uniform Guidance (2C.F.R. Part 200), as they relate to sponsored program activity.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, and follow-through.
  • Ability to work effectively within tight timelines and deadline pressure at a high professional level
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team and between teams, as well as constituents external to the centralized research administration office.
  • Evidence of leadership, with a demonstrated commitment to mentoring, coaching,and developing others.
  • Considerable critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent computer skills, including spreadsheets and databases.
  • Ability to develop and deliver technical training

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a centralized financial support services unit of a large, complex organization.
  • Experience working in higher education research administration.
  • Supervisory experience and ability to plan, direct and evaluate the work of others.
  • Reputation for proactively identifying problems and resolving conflicts, or independently facilitating satisfactory resolutions, requiring tact, skill and diplomacy.
  • Knowledge of accounting standards and principles.
  • Proficient knowledge of Banner
  • Experience using Cayuse

Communication
  • Shares progress reports and status update with Unit Leader.
  • Informs Unit Leader of service or staff issues and necessary steps needed or taken to address them.
  • Performs related duties such as conducting staff meetings, preparing written instructions for work assignments, resolving disputes and preparing narratives and statistical reports.

Duty/Responsibility

Team Leadership and Pre- and Post-award Grants Administration
  • Guides and directs activities for STAR Team staff.
  • Manages cross-functional activities of research administration staff, including oversight of pre-award and post-award interactions with Institutional Finance, Financial Center Operations, other campus units; and other units within the OSVPR EE&O.
  • Provides ongoing training to staff in pre-award and post-award research administration.
  • Works with staff to ensure timely proposal submission.
  • Works with staff to maintain compliance with all appropriate sponsored project guidelines.
  • Takes leadership position in complex grant start-up, management, and close-out.
  • Evaluates opportunities to enhance existing processes or provide improved service to client units.
  • Performs research administration functions for the units served (including maintaining a small portfolio of the more complex grants), able to serve as a back-up as needed and serve as a resource for STAR staff working through challenging transactions.
  • Oversees staff work and ensures procedures are consistent with policy; monitors relationships with assigned departments and centers to ensure high levels of satisfaction.
  • Provides regular and consistent feedback (verbal and written) to STAR staff and delivers annual performance reviews.

Policy Development and Dissemination/Training
Partners with other STAR team members, SPA pre-award and accounting and financial compliance staff to develop and present information and training sessions on pre- and post-award policies and procedures and award management techniques. Provides information in a variety of formats, including individual training, workshop type sessions, and seminars to PIs and STAR staff as requested.
