Summary of Job Duties:

The Center for the Study of Obesity within the Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health is seeking a post doctor fellow. The successful candidate will be integral to achieving the Center’s research mission by engaging in applied research related to obesity, nutrient/food consumption, and policy/program evaluation. The successful candidate will support the Center through
(1) Development of research studies
(2) Data acquisition, management and analysis
(3) Delivery of manuscripts, reports, proposals, and presentations

Qualifications:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will devote 100 percent of his or her time to develop and support applied research projects resulting in peer-reviewed publications and grant submissions.  This may involve presenting research findings to academic and stakeholder audiences.  Specifically, the successful candidate will be expected to design and implement empirical strategies to address endogeneity and selection issues in the economic analysis of secondary and administrative datasets related to nutrition, health, and human capital development.  These strategies are expected to incorporate the latest development in the econometrics of program evaluation to estimate causal program effects that inform health and nutrition policy.  In addition, there will likely be an opportunity to work with commercial medical claims data and retail scanner data in research projects.  It is anticipated that much of the work will focus on the effects of child nutrition programs and other school-level policies.  The successful candidate could also be engaged in one or more community-based research projects depending on interests, abilities, and skills. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Ph.D. in economics or subfield (e.g., agricultural economics, health economics), epidemiology, health services research, or closely related field.
  • Experience: Two years of research experience (including dissertation research experience) working on the economics of health, nutrition, and/or food policy.
  • Special knowledge, abilities and skills: The successful candidate must be conversant in R for use in econometric modeling and have the ability to manage and analyze large datasets.  Familiarity with other open-source data science platforms is a plus.  Stata will not be available. Candidates who use Stata and are not proficient in open-source alternatives should not apply.  Excellent writing skills and knowledge of econometrics related to endogeneity and selection issues are essential. The candidate should have training in PhD-level econometrics that permits rigorous analysis of administrative datasets using the synthetic control method, difference in differences designs, instrumental variables designs, and other strategies to estimate causal program effects.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: One or more years of experience conducting economic analysis with data from elementary and secondary schoolchildren is preferred.

Special knowledge, abilities and skills: Spanish proficiency is a plus.
