Research Engineer, Global Engineering and Research (GEAR) Lab

Job Description

RESEARCH ENGINEER, Mechanical Engineering (MechE)-Global Engineering And Research (GEAR) Lab, to engineer and build experimental prototypes and help coordinate the engineering efforts of teams of researchers in a group of ~20 students and staff.  Will design, prototype, and test embedded electronics, with a strong focus on power electronics for bench-scale and pilot-scale irrigation and electromechanical prototype systems; help mentor students; and oversee research plans and goals across multiple projects.  Opportunities may exist to be part of the founding team of a start-up company that spins off from the research.  

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  master’s in electrical engineering/related technical field; at least three years’ work experience working in an academic engineering research and/or commercial R&D environment; attention to detail; and excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership, organizational, and management skills.  Must be able to design complex embedded and power electronics in mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, including hardware, software, and controls subsystems; generate schematics and piping/instrumentation diagrams; design, prototype, build, and test a high voltage, high power DC/DC converter, PCB systems with integrated LTE connectivity and LoRa integration, controls and sensing systems, PLC wiring and software, and PCB systems; build and operate electrical systems for electromechanical prototypes, including component selection, fabrication, assembly, and wiring; use and maintain common electronics machine shop tools and machines; work independently and with students; communicate technical issues, give/receive constructive feedback, and manage team dynamics; program manage a team; maintain flexibility while managing projects with changing needs; and lift  up to 20lbs.  PREFERRED:  Ph.D.; familiarity with CAN, Eagle, or Altium Designer; experience working with high voltage (> 400V DC) systems and designing motor controllers; and familiarity with MATLAB, Solidworks, GitHub, LabVIEW, and Python.  Job #22782
