Job Summary

The Staff Research Associate 2 (SRA 2) will be under direct supervision of Dr. James Koh (https://endocrinesurgery.ucsf.edu/faculty/basic-scientists/james-koh-phd.aspx ), Director of the Endocrine Neoplasia Lab, and Jessica Foft, Sr. Clinical Research Coordinator in the the Department of Surgery at the University of California at San Francisco.

The SRA will provide technical research support PIs in the UCSF Endocrine Surgery and Oncology program in the areas of endocrine cancer biology and experimental therapeutics. The laboratory will employ a wide array of cellular, molecular, live-cell imaging, and animal modeling approaches in translational studies using human and animal tissues as well as in-vivo experimentation. The responsibilities include: ordering of supplies and maintaining inventory; aseptic isolation of cells from human and murine tissue for primary cell culture and cell line derivation; tissue processing, including sectioning and immunostaining; photomicroscopy and image analysis; analysis of gene expression using real-time PCR; protein analysis; assisting with small animal surgeries; and other duties as assigned. Keeping careful laboratory records, maintaining laboratory equipment, and supporting postdoctoral fellows in a variety of collaborative projects within the lab are critical expectations. The SRA will be expected to allocate time towards performing literature reviews, attending lab and journal club meetings, and preparing summaries of experiments to present during these meetings.  The will also be expected to have the ability to commit to position for a minimum of two years. The findings will have direct translational impact on current and future clinical trials using immunotherapy for patients with endocrine disorders.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The mission of the UCSF Department of Surgery is threefold: to develop the next generation of leaders in surgery; to provide outstanding quality clinical care that is cost effective, yet compassionate; and to make significant advances in scientific knowledge and clinical practice through basic and clinical research. Care of patients is what attracted our faculty and residents to surgery, and it continues to be our main focus.
The Department is comprised of eleven divisions that include Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Transplant Surgery, and Vascular & Endovascular Surgery. Our surgeons provide care at locations throughout greater San Francisco including: UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus (Moffitt-Long Hospital), UCSF Medical Center at Mt. Zion, UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, San Francisco VA Medical Center, and Alameda County Medical Center in Oakland. Our residents also rotate through UCSF Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente, and California Pacific Medical Center.


Required Qualifications

•    BS/BA in a related science (i.e. biology, molecular biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or biophysics) and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
•    Previous laboratory experience in biology or medical research.
•    Familiarity with tissue cell culture and molecular biology techniques.
•    Basic computer skills including knowledge and experience in MS Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
•    Excellent problem solving ability and attention to detail. Superior analytic and organizational skills. Able to propose solutions to difficult problems. High degree of innovation and motivation.
•    Excellent verbal, written, editing, communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with patients, faculty, staff at all levels, and non-university personnel. Proactive in communicating with many people at various levels of academic and industry environments. Demonstrated ability to craft sophisticated written communication pieces regarding sensitive correspondence. Excellent presentation and project management skills.
•    Must have judgment and diplomacy when communicating to staff and faculty at different levels of an organization. Good customer service. Professional attitude.
•    Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-based, dynamic environment, yet able to work independently with minimal supervision, exercising judgment and initiative. Possess excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and cooperate with research team in a diverse setting. Is a team-player and has a collaborative spirit.
•    Excellent time management skills. Proven ability to balance multiple projects and meet deadlines. Ability to coordinate multiple tasks and re-prioritize responsibilities as necessary. Demonstrated ability to organize and manage multiple and sometimes conflicting tasks, schedules, and work flow. High level of accuracy. Good follow-through skills in a multi-tasking environment.
•    Ability to handle blood and tissue specimens (animal and human samples).
•    Demonstrated record of excellent attendance, performance, and punctuality. Meets strict deadlines and accomplishes complex non-routine tasks effectively.
•    Understand relevant scientific concepts. Knowledge of basic molecular and cell biology techniques and laboratory skills.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in molecular biology techniques, such as PCR. Prior experience in maintaining cell culture lines.
  • Previous experience working in laboratory research at UCSF or another academic medical center.
  • Prior experience ordering lab supplies.
  • Familiarity with UCSF systems (e.g. REDCap, etc.)
  • Experience with FileMaker, MS Access database, Adobe Acrobat Professional, and statistical analysis programs such as STATA, SAS, or R.  Knowledge of programming languages Python and/or Matlab. Working knowledge of basis statistics.
  • Knowledge of statistical principles necessary to perform the appropriate statistical analysis and experience designing statistical models, analyzing complex datasets independently, etc.
  • Prior experience with various methods of data collection and methodology.
  • Experience working with large, complex administrative datasets.
  • Ability to carry out literature searches using Medline, PubMed, and other related databases.
  • Experience working in a lab within UCSF will be considered a plus.
