Position Function:

This is a full-time Postdoctoral Associate position in Biology Education in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetic (MBG) at Cornell University. The successful candidate will take a leading role in evaluation and design of new active learning strategies of core biology courses, including but not limited to: BIOMG 1350, BIOMG2800/2801 and BIOMG3300. This individual will (i) work with department faculty to develop, design, and implement active learning techniques in larger courses, participate in the college-wide Active Learning Initiative (ALI) program, including attending weekly ALI fellows’ meetings and facilitating ALI assessments such as surveys and class observations.  There will be opportunities for co-teaching, but the Postdoctoral Associate does not teach classes as a sole instructor.

The Postdoctoral Associate as a member of the Department of MBG, will receive professional mentorship from Department faculty, and will be invited to participate in department activities and events.

Anticipated Division of Time:

The position responsibilities will be:

  • Attending courses and existing active learning activities (20%) 
  • Meeting with instructors in group and individual meeting to discuss strategies for assessing and developing new activities (20%) 
  • Designing the activities (20%) 
  • Implementing the new activities (20%) 
  • Assessing the effectiveness of the implemented methods and activities (20%) 

Requirements:

The position requires a completed Ph.D. degree after 1 September 2018 with a specialization in any area of Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, and Development.

Preferred skills include demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion through innovative teaching at the undergraduate level, with a view to making Biology more accessible and effective.  As part of the Active Learning Initiative, the position will benefit individuals interested in developing faculty careers including a focus, as well as potential research, on pedagogy.  Interest and skills in new classroom technologies and creative approaches to teaching Biology are desirable but not required.

Pay Range:

$54,840.00 - $75,000.00

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.

  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.

  • Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)

  • Unique applicable skills.
