Postdoctoral Associate in the ILR Future of Work

The ILR School at Cornell University is hiring a Postdoctoral Associate in the ILR Future of Work program beginning in the Fall 2023 semester. The theme is the Intersection of Low-wage Workers’ Rights and Immigration Policy. The Postdoctoral Associate will work with ILR faculty members Kate Griffith and Shannon Gleeson. In addition to working on their own research, the Postdoctoral Associate is expected to conduct research with Griffith and Gleeson to advance a new research project in this area. This new project will evaluate recent experiments to rationalize the directives of immigration enforcement and labor rights enforcement through prosecutorial discretion for unauthorized immigrant workers. A number of labor rights cases that engage this policy are winding their way through the process. Drawing on this timely and unique policy shift, this project seeks to examine the impacts these efforts have on workers, labor advocates and labor rights enforcement agencies. The project aims to present research findings in both academic and practitioner outlets.

There are no teaching expectations connected to this position.

Postdoctoral Associate is a full-time, academic, non-tenure track, term position with an initial one-year appointment. The position may be extended for a second year, depending on available funding and work.

Roles and Qualifications

The Future of Work postdoc would advance research at ILR in a number of ways.  Research activities would include interviews as well as constructing a comprehensive database of relevant legal documents, media coverage and secondary literature.  To advance the research, the Postdoctoral Associate will connect to lawyers, representatives from government agencies, and civil society groups involved in the cases.  The Postdoctoral Associate will also work with Griffith and Gleeson and their colleagues at Cornell’s Worker Institute and the National Immigration Law Center to consider the research’s implications for policy and organizing initiatives.  In this way, the Postdoctoral Associate’s role helps bridge the dual goals of the ILR School: to produce world-class academic research in the world of work, and to be a premiere resource for labor education and outreach.

Awardees must have earned a JD and/or PhD within five years of beginning their fellowship.  Research interests and experience in law & society, labor & employment law, labor studies, immigration law or a closely associated field is a must.  Experience in labor organizing and/or immigrant rights advocacy is a plus.

The Postdoctoral Associate will receive supervision and mentorship from Kate Griffith, Jean McKelvey-Alice Grant Professor of Labor-Management Relations and Shannon Gleeson, Edmund Ezra Day Professor of Labor Relations. The faculty will meet with the Postdoctoral Associate on a regular basis.

ILR School will provide an annual salary of $70,000.00 for this the postdoctoral associate as well as a modest research budget and moving allowance.

This is an academic, full-time, non-tenure track benefits eligible term opportunity located in Ithaca, NY on the campus of Cornell University.

Pay Range:

$54,840.00 - $75,000.00

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.

  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.

  • Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)

  • Unique applicable skills.
