Job Description Summary:

The Associate Dean for Innovative Teaching and Learning will oversee the ongoing enhancement of GW’s programs in pedagogical innovation, face-to-face, blended, and online instruction. To this end, the Associate Dean will oversee the Instructional Core unit comprised of the Instructional Design team that works with GW faculty to create quality online courses; the Instructional Technology Lab that provides support for the learning management system at GW (Blackboard) and other faculty technologies (e.g. lecture capture, student response technologies); the Faculty Development team that provides instruction to faculty in improving their approaches to teaching; and the Strategic Digital Learning team that supports faculty in teaching with creative media. GW seeks a creative thought leader with strong management skills and experience as an instructor to work with this high-functioning unit as they help to enable curricular transformation at GW with pedagogically sound digital teaching tools. The successful candidate should aspire to further elevate the prominence of the Instructional Core unit, boosting its recognition as a leader in pedagogical advancements. This is a full-time position that will report directly to the Dean of Libraries and Academic Innovation (LAI) and be a member of the LAI Senior Leadership Team.
The incumbent is responsible for the following duties:
  • Manages the Faculty Development team, the Instructional Technology Lab (ITL), the Instructional Design team for online course creation, and the Strategic Digital Initiatives Team.
  • Creates an environment of collaboration that leads to better understanding of the value of teaching and learning initiatives across the university. This dialogue will inform the strategic vision, goals, and initiatives in support of the highest possible aspirations for the University which is striving to become a national and international leader in innovative pedagogy in higher education.
  • Collaborates with the other units in LAI to provide comprehensive support for the teaching and research missions of the university.
  • Develops a vision and strategic plan that includes faculty development at all teaching levels (undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral) and fosters the development of policies and programming that support faculty to become more informed, confident, creative, and reflective teachers.
  • Works to develop programs that expand the scope of teaching and learning initiatives to include other scholastic activities that make up the mission of the university.
  • Collaborates with Academic Affairs in the development of a landscape of programming support for faculty that includes both breadth of pedagogical approaches as well as depth of engagement in specific approaches.
  • Works with Deans, Associate Deans and Department Chairs to identify different ways to offer customized support for their respective constituencies.
  • Is responsible for the development, launch, and support of existing and new online and blended courses and programs.
  • Serves as an active participant in institution-wide online learning initiatives and committees, and develop a collaborative relationship with academic schools to support their curricular objectives.
  • Oversees the campus’ Learning Management System (Blackboard) and related technology resources used for teaching and learning activities.
  • Fosters growth through collaborative relationships with other distinctive teaching and learning throughout the region and nation, striving to establish GW’s Instructional Core unit as a recognized leader in this field.

The position is based at GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 10 years of relevant professional experience, Master’s degree, or higher, in a relevant area of study preferred. Relevant experience must include at least 4 years of senior leadership/executive level experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Doctoral degree required and 10 years of experience in instruction and higher education leadership.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • An innovator, collaborator, and strategist with a deep understanding of both the opportunities and challenges that are emerging in the rapidly evolving teaching and learning landscape.
  • A proven track record as an administrator supporting teaching and learning activities at a university; the ability to gain the confidence of faculty in order to catalyze support and enthusiasm for advancing the educational mission of the university.
  • Recognition for excellence as an instructor in higher education; should include experience with teaching online courses.
  • Experience in working with faculty in multiple disciplines.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills and an open and collegial style. Knowledge of research, best practices, and emerging trends in teaching and learning, as well as faculty scholarship and leadership. Demonstrated expertise in enhancing face-to-face, blended, and online teaching and learning.
  • A seasoned leader with the skill to elevate the visibility of the areas under her/his purview and serve as a partner for campus-wide priorities. Leadership in a successful higher education teaching and learning organization is a plus.
  • Possess a vision for fostering an environment of pedagogical innovation, including online learning.
  • Experience in successful management of budget resources and operations, including technology and highly-skilled professional staff; capacity to lead an effective, high-performing organization, including creating and implementing long-range plans; an ability to manage, motivate, and develop synergies and a sense of team among the staff and with the faculty.
  • Knowledge of current best practices for effective teaching and learning; knowledge of learning analytics; ability to provide leadership in pedagogical innovation that leverages cutting edge methodologies.
  • Professional engagement with non-profit organizations that promote teaching and learning competencies and a demonstrated record as an active participant in the teaching and learning community of professionals.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and creativity necessary for success in position.
