Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Provide educational opportunities and technical support for certified nutrient management consultants who work for University of Maryland Extension, agricultural consulting firms and as private contractors, developing nutrient management plans for agricultural producers to balance nutrient inputs with crop requirements. This work enhances production potential, improves farm profitability, reduces excess nutrient inputs into the Chesapeake Bay and enables producers to comply with the State of Maryland’s Water Quality Improvement Act of 1998.

Responsibilities include:
  • Implementing a training program for Extension nutrient management advisors, including technical review of nutrient management plans written by Extension nutrient management advisors.
  • Providing technical support for certified nutrient management consultants (public and private-sector) and certified farmer operators in nutrient management plan development and related activities.
  • Participate on a team both as an educator and as a developer of training materials in the areas of nutrient management planning and soil fertility management.
  • Represent the University of Maryland College Park, Department of Environmental Science and Technology, and Maryland Cooperative Extension. 
  • Produce program activity reports and reporting templates as directed by the Program Coordinator.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in agronomy, crop science, soil science or closely related field

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of agriculture and farming issues
  • Demonstrated teaching abilities
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Competency in the use of computer technology for educational programming and information management (WORD, PowerPoint, EXCEL. GIS, Google Workspace)

Other Required Qualifications:
  • Flexible working hours required; must be available for occasional evening programs
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and access to an automobile for travel

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Master’s Degree in agronomy, crop science or soil science or closely related field
  • Experience in agricultural planning
  • Certification and experience as a Maryland nutrient management consultant
  • Experience with distance education technology (such as CANVAS or Blackboard) and pedagogy

Additional Certifications:

Required:
Within one year of employment achieve certification through the Maryland Department of Agriculture as a Nutrient Management Consultant; maintain this certification.

Additional Information:

If offered employment, individual will be required before beginning job assignment to obtain (and satisfactorily pass) a background check by the State of Maryland and the FBI.

Physical Demands

  • Physical Demands: A routine part of this position’s responsibilities would be to transport materials to and from teaching events and workshops, including loading and unloading vehicles. The employee will frequently lift and or/move items weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Environmental: This position occasionally requires employee to work outdoors for experiential learning experiences.
