Position Highlights The Analysis of Higher Education (AHE) research group in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Arizona (UArizona), under the direction of Dr. Greg Heileman, is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on research topics involving the analysis of higher education, particularly in areas related to better understanding student pathways, the impact of curriculum on student progression, and other factors impacting student outcomes.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work on numerous projects in the higher education space involving the design of experiments related to student success interventions, development of theoretical models related to higher education, and the creation of predictive analytics frameworks for informing action-oriented decision making.

The duration of the initial appointment will be for one year and the position can be renewed based on performance and research productivity for a second year.

Duties & Responsibilities

Working with the lead faculty, the Postdoctoral Research Associate will be expected to:

  • Collect, analyze, interpret university-related data in support of the AHE research group.
  • Participate fully as an AHE team member, collaborating, supporting, and directing members of the AHE research team.
  • Co-advise graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Organize and facilitate weekly stand-up meetings in support of agile software development processes.
  • Summarize data and prepare weekly progress reports.
  • Write grants in support of AHE research efforts.
  • Prepare publications for peer reviewed journals.
  • Present work at national and international meetings and at regular group meetings.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Solid fundamental knowledge in network/graph theory, information theory, optimization theory, analytics related to higher education, and machine learning.
  • Comfortable working with large data sets, and experience using methodologies related to the analysis of big data.
  • An understanding of higher education-based reporting and analytics processes.
  • Software development knowledge using modern (agile) tools and techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, along with strong communication skills (writing and oral expression).

 

Minimum Qualifications
  • Conferred Ph.D. in Electrical & Computer Engineering, or closely related field, at the time of hire.
  • At least three (3) years’ experience in analytics and machine learning-related research and development.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive experience using mathematics/analytics-based programming languages, e.g., Matlab, Julia, R, along with a willingness to become an expert in the use of the Julia programming language.
  • Prior experience in analyzing higher education systems.
