Summary of Position

Plymouth State University (PSU) is accepting applications for an Academic and Career Advisor. The position will advise a caseload of incoming first-year students. They will work closely with these students on major, minor, and career exploration. This position will also help ensure students are in the right classes, support their transition to PSU, and assist those who are having academic difficulties. There will be frequent communication with parents, students, faculty, and staff . The Academic & Career Advising Center seeks a motivated, compassionate, adaptable, and visionary candidate with strong relationship-building skills to provide high-impact and scalable services to aid in student success and retention efforts.

Other minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred with a minimum of two years of experience in student advising, higher education, human resources, program administration or related field.
  • Experience coaching and advising students.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Public speaking experience.
  • Career development knowledge and skills.
  • Program/workshop development and facilitation experience.
  • Proficiency with various technology platforms including Microsoft Office Suite, student database software and other educational technology tools.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in college/university academic advising or career development office.
  • Experience developing and implementing programming for students.
  • Evidence of an innovative and research-based mindset.
  • A strong understanding of student development, specifically in the first year of college.

Duty/Responsibility

Academic Advising for a Caseload of First-year and Sophomore Students: The advisor ensures that students are in the right classes, are adjusting to campus, assists with majors, minors, and career exploration, and provides the necessary tools and guidance to start their academic and personal journey off successfully.

Duty/Responsibility

Probation Support Advising:Assist us in our continued efforts of meeting with students on academic probation and helping them create plans to increase their GPA’s and improve their academic performance. This includes meeting with the student either weekly or bi-weekly, making sure they’re retaking any courses they may have failed, and helping them create goals to get back on track.

Duty/Responsibility

Career Advising: Work with students on Career Development efforts including, but not limited to job search assistance, internship advising, and career and major exploration advising.

Degree Auditing/Planning:Assist in creating four-year-plans for students and helping them map out the courses needed to graduate within four years
