Description

The Department of Environmental Science in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University seeks a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Fellow (dependent on degree) in the field of atmospheric aerosol modeling. The fellow will participate in two NASA-funded projects aiming at understanding the development of volcanic plumes and their impacts on atmospheric reanalysis and data assimilation. Specifically, the fellow will use the NASA GEOS Earth System Model in combination with satellite and in-situ observations, as well as the output of a plume model, to improve the model representation of volcanic plumes and understand their impacts on the climate and atmospheric composition.

Specific duties of the position include:

  • Carrying out model simulations with the NASA Earth System model.
  • Model development and implementation in FORTRAN and Python.
  • Use of remote sensing data.
  • Analysis of climate model output.
  • Presentation of results at scientific meetings and publication in scientific journals.
  • (Occasionally) mentoring of graduate and/or undergraduate students.

This is a 1-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal based on the availability of funding. The salary is commensurate with experience, starting at $62,000 per year. The anticipated start date for this position is August 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position will be based at American University in Washington, DC and will be supervised by Dr. Valentina Aquila.

Review of applications will begin on May 1st and will continue until the position is filled.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have strong quantitative and programming skills and familiarity with the representation of volcanic plumes in plume and/or general circulation models. Candidates with an expertise in aerosol modeling and an interest in studying volcanic plumes are also encouraged to apply.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree on or before August 1, 2023.
  • Proficient coding skills.
  • Expertise in aerosol modeling.

Preferred qualifications:

  • PhD in atmospheric science, geology, geoscience, geography, environmental engineering, physics, or another field relevant to aerosol and/or volcanic plume modeling on or before August 1, 2023.
  • Expertise in volcanic plume development.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Evidence of ability to publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Evidence of ability to work independently.
