Research Specialist in Physics Education


Position Summary

Applications are invited for a research specialist in Physics Education in Lyman Briggs College at Michigan State University starting June 2023.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with a large team to support, maintain, and study relationships with regional community colleges and Michigan State University and will be supervised by Dr. Vashti Sawtelle. This position will support the IMPaCT STEM Transfer project through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Inclusive Excellence 3 project as well as other projects designed to support community college transfer students at MSU. The successful candidate for the current position will work on a team to support the project management of a dynamic collaborative effort and support the team in conducting qualitative and quantitative research to understand the pathways of students transferring from area two-year colleges.

Responsibilities include working in coordination with faculty and advisors at Lansing Community College, Washtenaw Community College, Mott Community College, and colleagues at Michigan State to:

  • support relationship building work with Lansing Community College and sustaining existing relationships with Washtenaw and Mott Community Colleges;
  • collaboratively develop project-level and team-member goals across the research projects designed to support transfer students at MSU
  • develop and conduct interviews with students, advisors, and faculty at all four institutions about students mindset and self-efficacy to complete a natural science degree;
  • code and analyze interviews with students from across the colleges;
  • support junior scholars in producing cutting-edge and publication-ready research;
  • support the research leadership team in seeking sustainable funding opportunities;
  • utilize research findings to inform program design and revision as well as scholarly publications in physics and other science education journals

The candidate will collaborate with faculty, post-docs, and graduate students in the Physics Education Research Lab (http://perl.pa.msu.edu/ ) and in Michigan State's CREATE4STEM Institute (http://www.create4stem.msu.edu/ ). The Physics Education Research Lab at MSU is a dynamic community that includes 6 principal faculty, 3 research associates, 7 graduate students, and several undergraduate students.

The appointment is initially for one year at 50% time with the possibility of extension, based on performance and the availability of funding. This position is remote-friendly, but will require some amount of on-site work for management and collaboration. The salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience. Appointment is contingent upon successfully completing a full background check.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates are expected to hold a Ph.D. in physics education, science education, or a closely related field with preference to candidates with graduate or postdoctoral experience in physics education research, particularly in the area of qualitative analysis. The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding project management and mentoring skills, a substantial research publication record and scholarly recognition in the field, and the ability to participate intellectually with undergraduate students, grad students, faculty, advisors, and staff in a collaborative environment.
