We are seeking talented and motivated applicants with training and experience in epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health sciences, or the equivalent to join the Epidemiology Branch at the NIH National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. A postdoctoral fellowship is available in the Environment and Cancer Epidemiology Group headed by Dr. Alexandra White.
Environmental risk factors for cancer are important but understudied. Few studies have considered simultaneous exposure to environmental mixtures in relation to cancer risk or evaluated how these exposures may be associated with markers of risk such as breast tissue characteristics. The postdoctoral fellow will be able to take advantage of data from unique resources including the Sister Study cohort and the Komen Tissue Bank. The Sister Study is a prospective cohort that includes over 50,000 women across the United States with extensive questionnaire data, and biological and environmental specimens. Study participants are followed for health outcomes including breast and other cancers. The Komen Tissue Bank is a repository of normal breast tissue samples from women with no history of breast cancer. It is a unique resource to evaluate how environmental exposures may contribute to breast tissue characteristics years prior to a breast cancer diagnosis.
The fellow’s time will be devoted to data analysis, manuscript preparation, and career development. Postdoctoral fellows at NIEHS are eligible and encouraged to propose ancillary studies that can be internally funded, and to apply for K99/R00 and non-NIH research grants. While NIEHS fellows have no teaching responsibilities, interaction with faculty and students at local universities (e.g., University of North Carolina, NC Central University, NC State University, and Duke University) can be facilitated. Opportunities for mentoring undergraduate and graduate students are also available. NIEHS offers comprehensive training and career development opportunities for fellows.

Successful candidates will have a strong background in epidemiology and statistical methods, with interest in environmental exposures, cancer, epigenetics, or women’s health. Experience in exposure measurement, mixtures methods, biomarker studies, geographic information systems, genomics and/or gene/environment interactions is beneficial but not required.
