    Summary

    Physics Lab Assistants work weekly schedules with times based upon the course that they are assisting. Each position is filled on a per semester basis. The Lab Assistant should report to the instructor for the course they are assigned. Lab Assistants are responsible for helping the instructor to ensure that the students complete the experimental portion/s of a given class period and for understanding how students are to complete the goals for a given experimental exercise (including helping with calculations). Lab Assistants perform routine tasks such as setting up and testing instrumentation or equipment and ensuring the teaching space is well maintained and organized throughout a class period.  The lab assistant is expected to be friendly and approachable to all members of the classroom. 

    Responsibilities*

    Responsibilities may include:

    • Assist students with proper set up and use of experimental equipment
    • Help students to understand the experiments
    • Know locations and appropriate usage of items being used in a given class period
    • Follow all departmental safety rules
    • Ensure good housekeeping in the classroom by doing the following:
      • Reminding students to clean up after themselves
      • Making sure that all items used in an experiment are put back in their place at the end of lab
      • Carrying out frequent reviews of lab supplies to ensure that all lab stations are fully equipped with materials for the courses taught in that lab room. Frequency of reviews to be worked out with the instructors.
      • Checking that there are sufficient quantities of materials/consumables for the next lab, including any specialty items that will be needed
      • Placing all equipment in appropriate location
      • Wiping desktops at end of lab
    • Reporting any broken/malfunctioning equipment to their assigned faculty member and helping to troubleshoot said equipment
    • Assist with annual chemical inventory

    Required Qualifications*

    • Must be a currently enrolled UM-Flint student or recent graduate
    • Successful completion and understanding of the course that is being assigned, equivalent experience, or higher-level physics courses
    • Recommendation by a Physics instructor
