Position Summary

The Cancer Center Research Administration is seeking an individual who has a strong accounting background and sponsored research experience to join our team.  The preferred candidate will be self-motivated with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate both verbally and written with faculty and staff at all levels.  The preferred candidate will also have excellent customer service skills, an eye for detail, and the ability to efficiently coordinate and complete a wide range of concurrent activities.  Additionally, the preferred candidate will have excellent organizational skills, flexibility with a changing and evolving workplace, and the ability to establish priorities and complete projects on time. 

The qualified candidate will be responsible for managing unrestricted and restricted funds associated with Cancer Center Research. Responsibilities will include monitoring and monthly reconciliation of indexes, preparing and updating monthly PI financial statements, attending monthly financial meetings with assigned PI’s and research administrators, timely review and approval of department transactions such as PCard reconciliations, reimbursements, and requisitions, timely submission of financial transactions such as effort certifications, labor redistributions and journal vouchers, preparing and entering mid-year and annual budgets, participation in Fiscal Year End closing processes and customer service to the Cancer Center’s research community by providing ongoing assistance to departmental research administrators and PI’s.  The qualified candidate will also be able to provide guidance and support to faculty and staff in regards to accounting related issues, UNM policies and procedures, and policies and procedures of external funding sources.

The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its 146 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 600 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provide treatment to 65% of New Mexico’s cancer patients from all across the state and partner with community health systems statewide to provide cancer care closer to home. They treated 13,578 patients in 105,748 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. A total of 1361 patients participated in cancer clinical trials, including 544 (40%) patients who participated in clinical trials testing new cancer treatments that include tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The more than 102 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded $36.2 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects. Since 2015, they have published 930 manuscripts, and promoting economic development, they filed 136 new patents and launched 10 new biotechnology start-up companies. Finally, the physicians, scientists and staff have provided education and training experiences to more than 530 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery. Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 12 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

·                 Proficient in MS Excel to analyze and interpret financial data and prepare financial reports.

·                 Experience working with UNM financial systems including: Banner, Chrome River, LoboWeb, MyReports.

·                 Contract and Grant experience.

·                 Knowledge of University Policies/Procedures and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.

·                 Ability to work independently and as a team member.

·                 Self-motivated and able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
