Job Summary

Completes requests for troubleshooting, repairs, maintenance, and installation of voice and data equipment. Provides reports and documentation on actions taken. Acts as a second level of support as part of a team of technicians who maintain and support voice and data communication systems. Identifies issues and resolves hardware and software problems through an appropriate course of action using established policies and procedures. Acts as a resource to other staff and clients on new voice and data technologies.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains network equipment (routers, switches, firewalls, WLC/APs, Load Balancers) as needed.
  • Troubleshoots connectivity issues typical in a LAN/WAN environment.
  • Provides reports/documentation in work order system and in department library regarding work completed.
  • Sets up new users and relocates existing users with voice and data services, including telephone extensions, calling features, voicemail, fax, ACL/VLAN configurations, port security, QoS, and other access layer related duties in a LAN/WLAN environment.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains voice equipment (i.e., phones, routers, call managers) as needed.
  • Assists in maintaining the telephone directory data.
  • Provides reports and documentation in work order system and department library regarding work completed.
  • Monitors voice and data systems for performance to assure dependable and uninterrupted operation of voice and data network systems.
  • Uses protocol analyzer to assist with protocol analysis support such as TCP/IP, multicast, and other routing/routed protocols.
  • Acts as a resource to other staff or clients on new network technologies and industry trends.
  • Assists in giving input in employee annual reviews.
  • Provides leadership in proactive network management support and problem analysis for the Enterprise WAN/LAN/WLAN.
  • Develops or establishes relationships with providers.
  • Maintains current skill set through professional initiative, on the job opportunities, and available formal training.
  • Participates in after-hours and on-call support.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related field.
Two (2) years direct, paid, full-time experience.
OR
Combination of education and experience totaling 6 (six) years.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Cisco certifications CCNA, CCNP, CCDP
  • Experience in VoIP design, implementation and support.
  • Experience in a Higher Education environment.
  • Experience with the following equipment/platforms: Cisco Nexus/Catalyst switches (L2/L3), Citrix/Big IP load balancers, Sniffer/Wireshark, VPN, firewalls, IPS, WLAN controllers, WiFi Administration.
  • Experience with the following protocols: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, FTP, SFTP, SMTP, TFTP, WWW, STP, SSH, IPSec, SSL, VSS, VPC, SNMP, EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, VRRP, HSRP, GLBP, Static Routing, SIP, RADIUS, TACACS+, LACP, RTP, RTCP, multicast, and others.
  • Experience with the following WAN services: MPLS, SIP, MetroEthernet/GeoMax, EPL
  • Experience with the following LAN services: Switched Ethernet, Fiber Optics, VLANs, WLANs, Bridging, VTP, 802.1q, 802.1x, VPC, Portchannel, Etherchannel.
  • Python based programming experience.
  • Linux/Unix experience.
  • Working knowledge or experience with MS Project.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to troubleshoot and configure routers, switches, and experience with troubleshooting tools like network analyzers and sniffers.
  • Experience with VoIP systems and their management.
  • Experience with wireless networking technologies and security concepts.
  • Experience managing, troubleshooting and creating VLANs, ACLs, and QoS settings in a LAN/WAN environment.
  • Experience managing an enterprise LAN/WAN networking environment.
  • Good communication (written and oral) and documentation skills.
  • Very end user oriented with excellent customer service skills.
  • Must be a team-oriented person and have the ability to work closely with team members.
  • Working knowledge of Windows and Mac desktop operating systems.
  • Good understanding of TCP/IP and Web technologies.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills
  • Experience with performance tuning, capacity planning, systems management, networking on multiple computing, and networking platforms.
  • Specific understanding of industry trends, standard concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Must have strong work ethic ready to work extremely hard in implementing relevant technologies.
  • Must have good organizational skills and the ability to work with staff and faculty at all skill/management levels.
  • Must be able to rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Must be able to perform a variety of complicated tasks with limited direction.
  • A wide degree of creativity and latitude is required.
  • Must be conversant at all management/staffing levels on technology topics.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
