Genentech

Job Description

The Position

The Human Genetics department at Genentech is looking for an exceptional computational scientist to study questions of key importance to the application of human genetics in drug discovery. Critical questions that we are now well-positioned to answer include:

  • What is the relationship between the genetic and mechanistic basis of disease risk vs disease progression, and is it the same across diseases?

  • Under what circumstances can we use polygenic (or polyproteomic) scores to stratify patients to support more efficient clinical trial recruitment, and how might such approaches be implemented in the context of ancestral diversity?

While this position is primarily computational, the project is highly collaborative, with regular interactions across the organization. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work closely with computational colleagues to access and analyze both internal data (from our trials) and from external data sets (FinnGen, UKBiobank and other biobanks) to address these questions. They will also have the opportunity for wider interactions, for example with colleagues in clinical development at Genentech, and with researchers in academia and in other companies who have interests in some of these questions (for example through our precompetitive involvement in FinnGen, ICDA and Open Targets).  Scientific insights resulting from this research are expected to be presented at external scientific conferences and published in high impact journals. This is an excellent postdoctoral opportunity for someone who is keen to contribute to our understanding of how human genetics (and genomics) can provide the evidence that drives the precision medicine of the future.

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Human Genetics or related field

  • Strong expertise in common disease genetics (GWAS, polygenic scores) and statistical genetics

  • Proven experience with applying standard pipelines for the analysis of large-scale genetic data sets

  • Demonstrated proficiency with R or Python

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate about complex genetic and statistical questions to both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Independent, highly motivated, and highly collaborative with the ability to work together with multi-disciplinary teams of computational and laboratory biologists

  • Enthusiastic about working in a scientific environment, especially one that is related to drug discovery and development

  • Quick learner, are curious about new areas and the opportunity to build expertise, and courageously and creatively take initiative to see your ideas implemented

  • Able to perform at a high level in a fast changing and demanding environment
