Job Summary

Salt Lake Community College’s Associate Deans are primarily responsible for shaping a division’s success, growth, and future. They have a direct influence over the professional growth and development of individual faculty and students. The work and effort of effective Associate Deans transcends routine management tasks. Associate Deans must clarify, communicate, and implement the department’s vision, mission, guiding principles, goals, and expectations. This position leads both SLTech and degree programs within the skilled trades/transportation areas. Position closely collaborates in workforce and corporate training related to content areas within the assigned program portfolio.

Acting as the primary spokesperson for assigned faculty and students, Associate Deans work with the College administration, peer institutions, the community, and prospective students in the critical areas of curriculum development, recruitment, and retention. They must proactively facilitate professional teamwork among faculty members in order to achieve the desired vision and mission as the best skills, knowledge, and attitudes of faculty are implemented in a collective effort to achieve that end. Because of the impact of their leadership, Associate Deans must be carefully selected, trained, and mentored as they accomplish this crucial role.

More specifically, the Associate Dean, Aviation and Transportation Related Technology will provide leadership, management and motivation for Division personnel; supervise and coordinate Division processes and procedures to ensure high-quality education and training for Salt Lake Community College including Salt Lake Technical College students. Serve as a member of the administrative team.

Instructional programs, operations and centers currently in the Division for which the Associate Dean is responsible include but is not limited to:
• Building and sustaining high quality programs within the division.
• Work with a variety of industry groups, program advisory committees, and organizations to assist in meeting the training needs of industry.
• Stay current with State and Federal guidelines and requirements as applicable to the related industries.
• Develop and coordinate student pathways from non-for-credit, technical education for credit, and degree programs both two and four-year.
• Work closely with the Director of Transfer & Articulation to establish articulation agreements with trades programming within the institution and with post-secondary educational partners.
• Recruit and hire faculty and staff to support the related programs in accordance with all Salt Lake Community College policies.
• Coordinate facilities and schedule program courses and activities.
• Provide resources and support to faculty, including manage department budget.
• Provide relevant reports to both internal and external constituencies.
• Assist with SkillsUSA competition.
• Perform other duties and project as assigned.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS:
Develop new and modify existing programs to promote student learning outcomes and program effectiveness. This may involve activities such as the following: Collecting and utilizing survey and workforce data.

Work collaboratively with Director of Transfer & Articulation in establishing and maintaining articulation agreements; manage Concurrent Enrollment options, as appropriate; processes; coordinate utilization of instructional facilities specific to assigned program portfolio.

Initiate, plan, and oversee implementation of all academic offerings department, with appropriate involvement of assigned faculty and staff, the Dean, and College planning bodies. Wherever appropriate, utilize and report the advice of program advisory committees and provide staff support to these committees and councils.

Take a leading role in academic program quality and assessment of student learning outcomes. Serve on the School Curriculum Committee. Support faculty in ensuring student learning outcomes are clearly articulated and met. Assist with department evaluations and program reviews for related to accreditation, licensure, student outcomes reports, program reviews, etc. Regularly review Canvas sites for courses within the department, provide feedback to faculty.

Ensure inter-departmental/inter-division coordination and cooperation, communicating effectively with the Dean, the department members, and other members of the College community.

Meet with department members on a regular basis to ensure coordination, communication, and dissemination of information. Create a culture of accountability.

Ensure that the class schedule meets students’ needs, while at the same time being fiscally responsible and efficient. Participate in college-wide scheduling processes in a timely manner, meeting all established deadlines. Participate in any institutional initiatives related to scheduling or enrollment. Support the exploration, scheduling, improvement, and use of learning modalities and delivery methods, including flexibly scheduled learning, distance learning, and classroom technologies, as appropriate for applied learning. Create strategic schedules that include evening options for students as well as Saturdays, as appropriate.

Ensure that the College catalog is accurate, well written, and current, and assist in the preparation of all relevant College documents, including the class schedule, brochures, etc. Maintain an inventory of current course syllabi, and monitor the development of new and revised syllabi.

Collaborate with School and SLTech marketing personnel to assist in the preparation of appropriate College printed and electronic program collateral materials. Regularly check all College website webpages for programs within department to ensure accuracy of information and visual appeal.

Manage and verify operational processes and procedures, such as teaching assignments, class and room schedules, class changes, etc. Work with departments and College Committees to maintain, update and implement existing and proposed curriculum to support the programs within the school.

Maintain necessary records, such as program and class enrollments, completions, equipment inventory, placements, transfer data, etc. Ensure faculty maintain appropriate student information for SLTech, including progress and engagement. Ensure student employment outcomes are tracked.

Lead the solicitation and utilization of input from program advisory committees and councils, including providing staff support.

Lead program and department evaluations. Develop and write necessary reports. Support and promote SkillsUSA activities at SLCC.

Work collaboratively with personnel responsible for corporate training, including sharing curriculum, instructional labs, faculty, and content expertise.

Associate Dean may teach one class per year, depending on the needs of the department and subject matter expertise. Teaching is not a requirement of the position. Teaching may not detract from primary administrative duties. Dean approval is necessary and Dean is responsible to ensure the ADs teaching schedule does not detract from their primary administrative duties.

PERSONNEL:
Ensure that College personnel policy and procedure is appropriately applied to personnel matters within the department, including Faculty Handbook(s). Utilize College policy and procedure to resolve faculty and staff grievances, concerns, and problems.

Support faculty in tenure-track position in meeting requirements, providing regular and specific feedback. Regularly conduct classroom evaluations for both full-time and adjunct instructions.

Coordinate and evaluate the professional activities of all members of the department, to include providing guidance to faculty regarding professional growth, evaluation, and tenure. Participate in the tenure process as described in policy. Assist the Office of Human Resources/People & Workplace Culture and Faculty Development Office in coordinating and facilitating necessary faculty records.

Establish and maintain a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

Consult with faculty members and the Dean regarding faculty recruitment, appointments, promotion, sabbatical leave, faculty retention, and other personnel matters, adhering to all appropriate policies and procedures.

Hire, orient and train, supervise and (if needed) discipline adjunct instructors and coordinate with assigned faculty and other College offices in their administration, and help adjunct instructors to develop pedagogic skills and collegiality within the department. Assist in hiring both full and part time faculty, and full and part time staff.

In collaboration with the Dean and Provost, verify and manage the assignment of the full-time faculty teaching assignments in compliance with established procedures and directives.
Provide for the management and supervision of assigned support staff and facilitate support for faculty teaching and service activities.

Appoint appropriate task forces and work groups within the department.

Schedule and coordinate work-study students, lab coordinators, readers, graders, and aides where applicable. Coordinate job and cooperative-education placement.

LEADERSHIP:
Promote collaboration and positive problem solving, both within the department, and throughout the college.
Provide leadership, support and supervision for department faculty and staff.
Coordinate department faculty and staff in endeavors to achieve the College’s mission and strategic plan.
Help the department faculty to establish an appropriate vision and appropriate goals that have a clear tie to the College’s mission, and coordinate efforts to achieve those goals.
Provide leadership with integration of new technologies for exiting programs and recommendations of those that meet industry needs.
Lead data-driven program development and updates consistent with industry demand.
Lead student engagement efforts specific to SLTech programs in assigned portfolio.
Lead program administration for both technical education and degree programs, including seamless transition options beginning with not-for-credit training.

STUDENTS
Serve as liaison for the department, especially for students. This requires that the AD’s office be covered, such that students and staff will find the AD’s office attended and open for business during regular business hours.

Coordinate with Student Affairs and department members to provide appropriate advising and consultation for students in department programs. Ensure students applying for SLTech programs receive the support they need in completing the process. Respond to institutional requests to connect with students.

Coordinate with Student Affairs, faculty members and marketing team to recruit students to department programs.

Participate in admission processes for selective programs, and help adjudicate student grievances as described in the Code of Student Conduct, and serve as a liaison for students and adjunct faculty members.

Promote successful student transfer and/or job placement and/or cooperative education placement.

Coordinate with Student Affairs in the administration of financial aid and scholarships.

Ensure classroom and instructional labs are environments that support inclusive, equitable, and physically safe learning.

BUDGET:
Monitor department inventory, supplies, and capital equipment.
Prepare and maintain a department budget.
Coordinate the informed budget process among department or division members and initiate budget requests with their justifications.
Maintain fiscal control of department budgets, ensuring that department funds are used in accordance with all College policy and state statute.
Define the fiscal needs of the School and prepare the Division budget so that they support the institutional mission and stated goals.
Ensure funds from different sources are appropriately expended.
Engage in the generation of alternative revenue or funding sources, such as grant writing and employer sponsors, following School and College policies.

Minimum Qualifications

Masters Degree in a related discipline or technology, business, leadership, higher education or related field.
Five years of management experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Three (3) or more years of successful teaching experience in a college environment.
Evidence of substantial leadership responsibility in an academic setting.
Professional experience within one or more of the programs under the supervision of the position.
Experience with creation and management of multiple budgets
Substantial experience in curriculum design and development.
Experience working in highly regulated industry sectors, such as aviation.
