The Library Technician I is essential to the Library’s Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery service and provides resource access to Fred Hutch faculty, students, staff and other authorized end-users. They contribute operational support to the administrative and customer service activities of the Arnold Library. This is a .5 FTE hybrid position that allows for remote work but requires occasional on-campus presence (approximately 1-2 days/week as needed to perform routine duties and fill requests for items located in the Library’s physical collection) with allowance for flexible work hours.
Responsibilities:
The Library Technician coordinates the daily activities of the Library’s Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service, and reports to the Collections and Acquisitions Librarian. The Technician performs data entry and complex library tasks, uses software, web and network-based resources including but not limited to ILLiad, OCLC, DOCLINE, PubMed/MEDLINE®, NLM serials and catalog databases, Ovid, Web of Science, and others, to support the information needs of the library's end-users.
 

The position requires an ability to efficiently accommodate a large volume of very detail-oriented work. The technician must be able to communicate comfortably and consistently within the Library team and with end-users, and to maintain high standards for customer service and public relations.
 

Essential Duties
  • Coordinate interlibrary loan and document delivery service, including, but not limited to, daily processing and distribution of ILL requests from library end-users, and lending and borrowing requests via ILLiad and other applicable resource sharing applications. These requests will be for both items in the Fred Hutch collections and located elsewhere. (30%)
  • Identify libraries holding the requested article, book or media using local, regional, and national online electronic resources (including but not limited to DOCLINE and OCLC). Consider numerous variables – including prioritizing timeliness, cost, and work volumes of other institutions – when selecting the most appropriate or desirable lending library. (20%)
  • Triage incoming questions from end-users and assist patrons with library use, general reference and bibliographic questions, referring users to librarians when necessary. Perform complex and basic verification of requested references by using resources such as PubMed, Web of Science and other bibliographic databases. (20%)
  • Provide electronic resource management support and quality assurance to online journal access tracking in the Library Management System. (10%)
  • Contribute to the library department’s function as a team, including attending and participating in regular staff meetings, completing assignments as assigned by other library staff, and representing library policy and procedures to patrons. (10%)

Qualifications:
Required:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Excellent judgement and ability to manage a large volume of detailed work accurately and efficiently.
  • Strong data entry and data management skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, while remaining a supportive and engaged member of the Library team.
  • Willingness to contribute to the overall function and progress of the Library and Research Administration departments.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent customer service and attention to detail are critical to success in this position.
Preferred:
  • Associate's degree in Library Science
  • Library experience preferred. Work experience can be substituted for education.
  • Demonstration of entry-level skills with ILL resource tools including but not limited to ILLiad, OCLC, and DOCLINE.
  • Basic understanding of copyright laws as they pertain to the library environment and ILL service.

The hourly pay range for this position is from $19.19 to $25.95 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
