The MSE department in the College of Engineering at CMU is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to join Prof. A.D. (Tony) Rollets group to support the new NASA-supported Space Technologies Research Institute (STRI) in metals additive manufacturing (3D printing), the Institute for Model- Based Quali?cation & Certi?cation of Additive Manufacturing (IMQCAM). In this role you will work with Prof. Rollet’s to both perform research on materials models relevant quali?cation and certi?cation and will help coordinate the models developed across the team with respect to, e.g., interoperability. The emphasis of the scienti?c research will be on developing models of microstructure development in Ti-6Al-4V and nickel alloy 718 that include defect structures as well as grain structure with texture. The PI will mentor you for  future  faculty  positions  and  for other relevant career opportunities.

Core responsibilities include:

• Perform research and development on projects with emphasis on models related to metals 3D

printing

• Perform data analysis and other experimental procedures

• Assist masters and doctoral students in tasks related to the metallurgy of printed materials,

especially with respect to heat exchangers and related components

• Report and present results at conferences and workshops, and to visitors

• Identify problems and obstacles to progress; develop strategies to tackle problems

• Interface with equipment vendors

• Write reports and papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals

• Document information by compiling and maintaining accurate and detailed records

• Perform related duties as assigned, e.g., writing proposals

Qualifications:

PhD in Engineering or Physics, preferably in Materials Science (required)

2-8 years of industrial experience with metals additive manufacturing (desired)

2-8 years of research and research lab experience (required)

2-8 years of experience with machine learning (desired)
