Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Faculty Research Specialist will work at the Methods and Application of Food Composition Laboratory/USDA on a NIH funded study of analytically verified food and dietary supplement content with respect to iodine, purines, nitrates and nitrites. The study maintains and expands the USDA Special Interest Databases (xxx). The successful candidate will monitor research samples, enter data into study databases, and will be responsible for data analysis, graphing of research results, documenting processes, and writing reports. This position requires the ability to use technical knowledge to make judgments and decisions, and to work independently as well as cooperatively as a team member to achieve project goals within deadlines.

Major Responsibilities (in order of importance)
The major responsibilities for this position include monitoring of sample procurement and handling for shipment to commercial and academic laboratories; data entry and auditing of meta data about food and dietary supplement products and their chemical composition; compiling and analyzing data on the ingredient content of using Microsoft Excel and Access and other software programs, including coding software; designing data formats and graphing data using graphing software; managing special projects critical to this research; documenting research activities and decisions; providing work products to team members as written reports or presentations summarizing activities, processes and results; writing/drafting reports for presentation to research leaders, NIH scientists, and at professional conferences.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
B.S. in science or related field and some experience with scientific research.

Experience:
  • Experience with Microsoft Access and Excel. 
  • At least one year of experience in scientific research.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Logical thinking and organizational skills.
  • Ability to accurately record and check data, to work independently, to communicate effectively in a team environment, and to document project status.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • M.S. in science or related field.
  • At least one year of experience in scientific research.
  • Experience with food composition and environmental research.
  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Access and Excel and with data visualization.

Physical Demands

Most of the work will be working at a computer or attending meetings. Other research activities may involve working with samples (e.g., purchasing samples, moving samples from one freezer to another, preparing samples for laboratory testing) or keeping humidity levels low in sample storage rooms by dumping water from dehumidifiers.
