Program Overview
The University of Notre Dame Upward Bound Program is a federally funded educational opportunity program that provides fundamental academic support to 104 first-generation, low-income participants to succeed in pre-college performance and ultimately, post-secondary pursuits. A component of Upward Bound is the Summer Academy, a supplemental six-week program that includes academic, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities designed to provide academic support, cultural enrichment, as well as, personal and career counseling. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rates at which participants enroll in and graduate from post-secondary institutions.

Reporting directly to the Program Advisor and Upward Bound staff, the Academic and Residential Advisor will provide live-in supervision for high school students from culturally diverse backgrounds during the residential component of the Upward Bound Summer Academy. He/she will be responsible for the well-being of Upward Bound (UB) participants while in and out of the classroom; provide tutoring and peer counseling; the development, implementation, and monitoring of academic, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities; and serve as role model/mentor to grow the participants’ knowledge and understanding of what it takes to be successful in college while preparing for the following year of high school.

· Enforce and adhere to University of Notre Dame and Upward Bound policies and procedures regarding campus and residence hall behavior and safety
· Model behaviors that establish and maintain a positive, professional, and respectful mentor-student relationship
· Reside on campus (overnight stay) for the duration of the summer residential program
· Conduct group/individual meetings with students to assess morale and address concerns
· Provide tutoring and assist participants to help master assignments and reinforce learning concepts
· Provide mentoring, discuss post-secondary options, and provide counsel
· Participate in the planning and implementation of recreational and cultural activities
· Meet daily with Associate Director and Advisor for updates on program
· Perform other related duties as needed
Minimum Qualifications
· Possess excellent interpersonal communication and conflict resolution skills
· Currently pursuing a post-secondary degree and in good academic standing
· Demonstrated record of providing structured supervision to youth or related groups
· Understand the experience and needs of underrepresented student populations
· Willingness and ability to work irregular hours
· Ability to tutor a variety of subjects
· Ability to make important decisions as situations arise
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience serving as a mentor, leader, or group supervisor
· Demonstrated ability to work under minimal supervision
· Prior residential advisor or camp counselor experience
· Current postsecondary student with a strong academic record
· Knowledge of TRIO Programs and Upward Bound
· Experience working with culturally diverse students
· Experience enforcing organizational policies and procedures
