Summary

The Computational Medicine and Biomechanics (CMB) Lab invites applicants to apply for a research assistant position starting Spring 2023.  The lab is housed in the College of Innovation and Technology at the University of Michigan-Flint.  The lab focuses on using computational medicine methods to solve various problems related to cardiovascular diseases.  The lab utilizes numerical techniques coupled with machine learning tools to better understand the underlying mechanisms of how the human heart is beating.  Special emphasis is placed on recruiting candidates with demonstrated moderate levels of expertise in computer science, numerical and analytical techniques to work on a project that aims to stimulate the contraction of a human heart.  This is a link to the lab: https://aboelkassemlab.org/

Responsibilities*

Job responsibilties may include the following:

  • Perform an intensive literature review about the subject matter
  • Compare between existing computational modeling methodologies and identify/propose possible ideas to extend the current methods
  • Collect in-vitro data from previously published data to validate the proposed mathematical model
  • Develop a high-fidelity computational platform using software expertise (coding) to simulate the underlying mechanism of the heart function
  • Use this computational model to create synthetic data for validation (and it can also be used as a training set for machine learning development)
  • Develop a simple machine learning algorithm to extrapolate the finding from the mathematical model
  • Prepare manuscripts/technical reports/posters/presentations

Required Qualifications*

  • Must be a current of University of Michigan-Flint undergraduate student or recently graduated from a UM-Flint undergraduate program and not currently enrolled in a graduate program
  • Basic experience with published characterization techniques
  • An ability to work in an interdisciplinary team
  • An interest in working on biomedical related scientific problems

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience using software and experience coding are preferred
  • Knowledge of cardiac systems is preferred but not required
